3vze head gasket replacement : my turn

^^^ good thought about the intake gaskets going to the heads!
However I had the same thing - fog fog fog fog fog, until finally I said F*** IT, and drove it balls to the walls for about an hour. (After 3 oil changes - yes 3 changes with zero miles driven, and 1 tranny + filter change)
Smoke left.
My conclusion is that there is a ton of crap that gets into your down pipe forward of the cat when the truck pop's its HG and when you have it apart. And its just taking time for everything down there to incinerate under the 1000+ *F exhaust gasses.
See if the smoke under the hood smells sweet or more like burnt oil. You might have oil drippings on the manifolds. Also if your heads were rebuilt, they would have used assembly grease on the valve seals - this stuff would take a while to burn off as well.

From what I've read, the block is much less likely to warp than the heads. When i did my HG job at 210K, neither the block or heads were measureably warped. However, the machine shop that did my valves suggested that I have the heads resurfaced. Where the HG failed at Cyl#6 and #1, there was a small amout of chaffing damage to the head surface and this is what the machine shop pointed out to me. The Block did not have any percievable chaffing. When I started my truck, there was a small amount of steam .. commensurate with a nomal cold engine start and warm up. I believe a small amount of steam after starting is normal.. but not that thick fog machine smelly steam that you get from a HG allowing antifreeze into the combustion chamber.
TNR's question eludes to having coolant in the oil. Is there any chance that you have some residual coolant in block oil from either the HG work or from the original oil?
Another thought, did you use new intake manifold gaskets, particularly the ones between the intake and heads? If these are not sealing.. it may be possible for coolant to get into the intake.

the thing is your EGTs arent going to rise much by just idleing or revving. EGTs might hit 500* at the exhaust port doing that. Its only by placing the engine under load do you hit 1300+ *F (I believe someone reported 1550*F or so at WOT at the exhaust port) Under that kind of heat stuff will burn nice and quick.

good news. coolant steam is no longer pouring out of the exhaust and after timing it to 12deg BDC it is idling much better. when put into gear it doesn't feel like stalling anymore either. i did a quick drive around the block and although it idled/accelerated inconsistently (faster/slower/faster/slower) it made it no problem. AC and power steering still work, and most importantly NO ENGINE CODES!
smoke is still wafting up from near cylinder #6 but I'm more convinced that it is something that is on the manifold and is burning off. i'll continue to monitor for the next few days.
anyone have any ideas on how to deal with the erratic idle/acceleration?

Seem like a missplace vacuum, follow the diagram under the hood and it'll lead you to the right one, or else if you can take a picture of it then it is better. It is possible that its burning something off when you was working on it so like you said wait for a few day's.

one final update to my epic saga...
after final reassembly i had an off idle and inconsistent acceleration. a user suggested my TPS was out of calibration so I attempted to adjust it. I got the TPS screws loose but other than that it was too hard to adjust while the throttle body was on the vehicle so I just made alignment marks on the TPS and the TB and rotated the TPS from stop to stop then put it back to where it was originally. I started it up and noticed an immediate improvement in the idle. Drove it around the block and had the throttle response back to normal and it is pretty much driving like new. so stoked!
anyways, the registration was past due and I had to get it smogged so I took it to the Test Only station today. forgetting that i set the timing to 12* i was stressing that it would fail but i was wrong, it passed with flying colors!
to celebrate, I proudly put on a yotatech.com sticker on the back and I now cruise around with pride that I tackled this job and came out victorious. thank you all so much with your help and advice.

I ran across some good general tips on gaskets here: http://www.robbos.com.au/myweb/Tech_Gaskets.htm

My HG job is going strong also, passing smog checks without any issues. The emissions numbers are so good, that the smog station commented to me that the engine is in excellent shape.

. tomorrow i'll let it run longer and see if the coolant steam content diminishes and look for other leaks and whatnot.
