3rd member question

I need to replace welded diff. So if i get a differnt open carrier do you think i can get away with keeping the pinion as is and just adjust backlash? I am reusing my ring and pinion, just putting the ring gear on a differnt diff. It is a 4cyl setup.

Thanks

...what? you mean can you put the ring and pinion from the welded 3rd member onto the new open 3rd member and you want to know if you can use the same shims as you had before? that all depends on the backlash you get. but to be safe i would get a set up kit

most of the time you just reuse the old shims and it comes out pretty good, but if you do any hard wheeling on it they will break without the right setup, search zuk he does good work ide send it to him if you had the time,

if its for the /86 .. it'll have a crush sleeve and no you can just reuse it .. if your thinking of leaving the pinion in place and just replacing the carrier and crown gear .. no you cant do that either .. well i guess you could , but it wont last long ...

I am going to take out the welded part, keep the pinion in the housing, and then just swap over the welded carrier with a differnt open carrier. Put the ring gear back on the open carrier. Put the carrier with ringgear back in the 3rd member. Check backlash and install. So I wouldnt touch the pinion. And the ring and pinion are both the same ones i originally had so they are matched to each other.
