So my 3rd member is messed up in my 87 runner and I was wondering if you can take a 3rd member out of a v6 I know the hearts could be different and ok with changing that any information can help thanks

the third member houses the diff.
as for your swap, iirc teh v6 3rds are heavier but a good upgrade. then again im a first gen guy. lol, and still getting used to yotas. XD

 

All 8 inch third members are interchangeable no matter the year of the truck they came out of or the engine that was in the truck. That being said, the third members out of the v6s are a heavier duty part but they still work in other applications as long as it is an eight inch axle

 

yes, it will swap right in. just make sure it's geared the same as your front diff

Ok Thanks! I'm pretty sure the automatics have 4.88s in them so I think I'm going to go with that gear ratio

 

most autos have 4.30's very few came with 4.88's

that will help you not only determine what gears yo uhave but what the donor truck has

 

One of the easiest ways to tell what your gear ratio is, is to drop the drive-shaft and look at your pinion nut. If no one has messed with it, it should have a color on it. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo.shtml <- That's a link to a page that has the color code. And also any diff out of a rear toyota axle will fit, and I used the front diff out of a solid axle for a while, so they work to. And getting the whole rear axle from the V6 would b a good choice, hey're considerably thicker.

 

Ya my rig has 4.10s in it I want to gear it lower anyways so 4.30s would be good too

 

then just make sure to get the front diff also if you're swapping.

 

I wouldn't go on the idea for the gear paint. if someone did some work on the rear or front diff they could have used any color paint. It is a great theory if it has never been touched before tho.
