Sounds like a fair bit of change for only a few hp.

 

You can get a cold air intake on ebay for roughly $40. Throw away the filter that comes with it and buy a K&N or a Spectre.

 

I have the S&B I got for pretty cheap on craigslist. The best part about the S&B is that its the closest to a true cold-air intake that Ive seen for the 3vz with the air box. It installs fairly easy too. Yeah its pretty pricey but if you're set on buying either of these 2, its worth it, and I would definitely go with that over K&N because its closed off and sucks air from behind the headlight like stock. I probably would have neverspent the full $180 though, unless I had the extra chash just sitting around

 

make your own for a lot less $$$ search isr threads and get lots of ideas. save yourself 150 bucks to spend on something else. 50 cold air kits on ebay, exhaust pipes, plumbing pipes, have all been used cheaply and with good results

They are only $8.00 apart in price. K&n always builds high quality parts but I think it will suck in hot air from the fan.

six_stringer do you have pics of it installed? I don't see how the maf is installed.

 

Agreed, you may even be able to just throw a K&N pre-filter sock that goes around the filter for extra filtration. It's just a tube and a filter. I don't see any reason to spend $180+ on one of those kits myself.

I will say this. When I added a better intake, header, free-flow cat and catback exhaust to my old 4runner 22re it registered quite well on the butt-dyno. I couldn't give you a real horsepower number as I didn't have it dyno'd but to me it was worth the money I spent on it. I plan to eventually do the same to my 3.0 mostly so the headers can help protect my head gaskets but if there is an extra few hp that'll be a bonus.

Still beats $200 bucks. I do like the looks of the one with the airbox that pulls air from the stock location though.

 

Yeah I really like it how its closed off from the engine heat. The filter is pretty good quality too. Again though, I naver wouldve spent the cast on the S&B if it wasnt on Craigs for cheap

That my friend is not a cold air intake but rather a hot air intake. A waste of $40.00.

I think you'll be happy with it. It took me about 20-30 minutes to install taking my sweet ass time. There will be people who will give crap about it because of the price or that anything intake-wise isn't stock is stupid but oh well they can suck it haha

 

i have a weapon r intake, and its great! it really hauls once it gets to about 1800rpms

 

I have the K and N. Little of a pain to install but wasn't bad. All the smog equipment hooks up nicely. The only thing I don't like is that the MAF sits sideways. I am not sure if it will cause any problems.
