Unhappy 3.0 v6 mixed up cylinder heads on rebuild. Dizzy wont fit; any fix?

Hello all, I am just finishing up my head gasket rebuild and I swapped the heads, not realizing they were any different...

Now the distributor will NOT fit in. it gets stuck with 1/4-1/2 inch of gap. I read below from "Enginebuildermag.com" that the pilot hole is the problem and possibly the earlier (88-90) distributor had a smaller pilot.

Any ideas if I can get a 88-90 dizzy and install that? I can't believe this pilot hole is the only thing Toyota didn't machine the same between the heads.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. I've done a few rebuilds with mk3 Supras and mr2's and I generally consider myself meticulous so this is extremely frustrating.

"Cylinder heads
The cylinder heads are unique from left to right due to a spot for the distributor, although you can convert the heads by changing the caps and line boring the cylinder head. The early cylinder heads (’88 through ’90) had a smaller pilot hole for the distributor than the later ones which were 10mm.

To make a universal application, some shops have successfully machined the pilot holes to 10mm to fit later applications. This can be done without any problems if used on an earlier application with the smaller piloted distributor. The left and right camshafts did not change throughout the life span of the motor."

I would think your best bet is to find an early distributor at a junk yard. To machine the pilot hole accurately, I would think the head would have to be removed and taken to a machine shop. Good luck and let us know what you do.

Earlier distributors also have a different connector. Also not sure if the cam & crank position sensor (signal generator coil) resistance values are the same - I think they might not be, so recommend checking.

Well I found the later generation 3vze's are completely missing the shaft that is causing me so much heartache. Though I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone else, I cut the shaft so it fit it.



That was enough to get it running. Now it still runs rough. I replaced plug wires, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor and it still runs like crap. Occasionally when I let off the gas it dies. Extremely frustrating. I've raised the idle to about 1000 rpms and it still dies occasionally.

Compression is good and there are no engine codes. The engine sounds loud towards the front. It sound like a go kart, almost. I'm wondering if there is an intake leak below the plenum/manifold somehow, but that seems incredibly unlikely. I used all new Toyota gaskets and had very clean surfaces.
