Total cost to date is right about 2k. The headers and exhaust will put it at about a little over 3k. No performance mods to the engine. Everything is stock. I weighed the cost of a 3.4 swap, but figured it would be pretty close to the same in cost if the 3.4 was not rebuilt. I decided on staying with the 3.slow because we should get an additional 150k miles out of it. I decided to stay stock exept for the headers because it belongs to my 16 year old son and I know what I was like at 16 with a souped up 68 289 mustang. I will take a look at Doug Thorley today and let you guys know.

 

Love the engine! Great job so far! As far as headers go I have the Downey headers and full exhaust and have no problems with it. But you might check out North West Off Road I have heard good things about their headers, just an idea.

Thanks for the info Dragonltd. North West Offroad headers are sweet. I just checked them out. Again, unfortunately, the are not for sale or use in CA. Damn tree huggers. I wish I could afford to move out of Cali.

 

Anyone ever paint their radiator. Im thinking of painting the top because the original pant is flaking off. I would like to paint it red to match the motor.

im sure that the hi temp paint would work for that as well, but, i know it is pretty stupid and im gonna say it anyways, dont paint the fins... im pretty sure that would inhibit the cooling...

I've never painted the rad, but on both my 91 and 88 22re, I painted the valve cover and the intake on the 91 with rustoleum hammered black and haven't had any problems with the heat affecting the paint. so i don't see why you couldn't paint the end tanks.

 

Thanks abecedarian. I see you are a local Temecula valley'r. I'm off 79 south in the Red hawk area. I have seen some of your posts on this site and you seem to have quite a bit of knowledge in the Yota dept. As soon as I am done with my sons 3.0, I have to finish my 22RE build. I pulled it out after spinning the #4 rod bearing and started tearing it apart about 2 weeks before my sons motor blew the head gasket. If you ever in town off Jefferson, Give me a shout and we can hook up for a beer at Hard Hats.

 

I painted the top, bottom and sides of my radiator before putting it back in. Of course, the paint came off where the small cracks formed from being so old.

That is a very nice looking engine. Instead of putting it back in the truck, how about just eating Thanksgiving dinner around it?

 

Actually, my buddy said I am gonna have to leave the hood of the truck now due to all the work. He said why hide it. I guess that would help to prevent it from overheating ever again. Thanks for the cudos. I should have some pics of it installed in a couple of weeks. Just gotta wait till payday to order the headers.

 

O.K. I just strted cleaning the plenum today. What a pain in the arse. How are you supposed to get all the way back in there to scrape all the crud off? I have some really strong degreaser called oil eater, but it stains aluminum. Anybody got any ideas on a solution I could soak it in to clean it really good? I have taken the throttle body off and cleaned as far in as I can go with scotch brite and a really long screwdriver, but an inspection mirror shows the same crud buildup around the corners that I cant get to. Also, Does anyone know what the flow rate should be on the 95 runner injectors? The guys at the dealer had no idea.

 

I stripped everything off my plenum and gave it to the guys at the machine shop. I think they put it in the hot tank and pressure washed it out. It still wasn't 100% but at least it didn't have 1/4" of carbon on it.

Just soak it in carb or throttle body cleaner, put on a raincoat and go to the car wash. Better yet get your son to do it....it's going to be messy.

+1 on the hot tank idea... inless you wanna run nothing but seafoam thru your intake for a month... lol...

Thanks for the input on the radiator guys. I plan on painting it this weekend. I am heading to the junkyard tomorrow to pick up some odds and ends that I still need. I am also ordering the headers tomorrow. Should be here next week sometime. I am hoping to be ready to install the motor next weekend. I will post up some more pics hopefully this Sunday. My son is getting pretty antsy to have his truck back. Now that Pop Warner is done and high school football ends tomorrow, maybe we can get some work done on this thing. I am rebuilding my 22re immediately after due to a spun bearing.

 

Any new info man? Curious to see what happened to this sweet looking motor.
