I would do that and if you can get the timing right, I would buy a solenoid kit for the tranny.

Ok thanks for the tip. One more quick question I have a friend that has a tranny from a 98 Tacoma he says will work if all else fails but I would have to swap the transfer case for one off of a 22r rig because the shaft is on the opposite side. Is this correct and if so how big of a deal would it be to make the swap?

If it is the solenoids that is a helluva lot easier to replace than a tranny. Do some searching on this site and you will find info about replacing the solenoids but you dont have to drop the tranny to replace them. You just need to drop the pan.

Engine HP HP/CC Torque Torque/CC

2.4 116 .048 140 .058

3.0 150 .050 185 .062

3.4 183 .054 217 .064

Is the 3.0 less efficient than the 3.4? Yep. But the beloved 2.4 is less efficient than the 3.0. If the 3.0 was as large as the 3.4 it would put out 170 HP and 211 lb-ft torque. Not to bad.

Has the 3.0 had issues? Yes. But the early 2.4's had head gasket issues as well and the later 22r's had timing chain issues. The early 3.4's had head gasket issues as well. They all have issues.

If you want more power drop in a Lexus V8. You can even use the 4runner auto transmission.

Vj95 do you have a link to see the specs on that Lexus V8? While I might not need to swap right now I don intend on getting rid of my 4 runner and would like to start making plans for additional mods.

There is no such thing as a stupid question my friend. Yes automatics suck I don't care if Chevy made it. Mine is a standard 5 speed and its is beat to the limit when I got it, but it drives and shifts perfectly. I am still working on it every chance i get like today lol.

check the throttle cable to because my 4 runner had a broken cable and it was a weird feel to the pedal to and the flat spot n the RPMS.

As far as being underpowered, sure there are times when I wish I had a little more oomph, but I live at 7000 feet elevation, the speed limit on the highway (I-25) is 75 MPH. I have NO issue getting up to speed, keeping up with traffic, and keeping my speed thru the mountains that surround me.
Not many other cars on the road that have a quarter million miles that car hold a candle to a well cared for 4Runner.

Keep it!!!!!
Hey man I live in Belen and I am working on fixing my 1988 4 runner. I am just trying to make more Toyota buddys let me know if you need any parts I specialize in hunting and finding Toyota parts in NM.

The cable that runs over the top of the throttle and down to the transmission( kickdown linkage???) has looked loose to me on several occasions after the truck has set and not ran. I had a mechanic at the local yota dealership look at it and h said it was fine an went on to say that it shouldn't be very tight anyway or it won't work properly.

No the throttle cable from your gas pedal. Mine was broken and it was not able to wide open throttle, it felt restricted. I say its your automatic trani.

Yea that's what everyone is telling me. It was suggested that it could be my solenoids. But those things are a lil pricey. I just pretty much rebuilt the entire top end on th 3.0 so I'm trying to keep from dumping alot more cash into it right now. So is there a way to test those solenoids to see if that's the culprit before I replace them?

So I did a compression test on my 3.0 not good I have blown heads but no oil in my water. I hope when i take it a part its not my rings it doesn't smoke either and it has some balls!! well life is a gamble.

I did some measurements on my 83 4x4 Hilux ,and my 94 2wheel cabs and beds I think the swap will go over rather smooth (I'm hopping) its good news since I cant get the title from the old man I bought it from I'm going to check the master cylinder on the 94 and see it I can use the 83 OEM brake lines. I want to see if the steering shaft and rag joint on the 94 and the 83 can work some how. Any suggestions?? Any other ideas for anything else to check or look out for??

honestly i love my 3.0, it has alot of power,in 92 the motor was desighned by yamaha motor corp, its the only motor that is not a doch, or twin cam. as far as my motor in my rig i love it, its been rebuilt, has plenty of power, has no mods to it besides a k&n and a magnaflow glasspack after the cat, it screems, burns up hills, gas milage is fine, and its still on a 9inch lift.
