16 to 17 mixed Highway/ City
15 to 16 Interstate w/ Cruise at 80
13 to 14 Interstate cruise at 80 and 3 kayaks on the roof.
10 Towing an 87 4runner on a dolly 400 miles on the interstate at 70

and no that dosen't compensate for the larger tire size, because the GPS says it's accurate.

Generators, alternators, and motors are usually VERY efficient in turning power into motion (and vice versa) - that's why hybrids work, but belt driven is 100%. I would imagine the gain is much more due to the rotating weight and blade design of the fan itself than the way it is driven.

Tire pressure will make WAY more than 0.5 MPG difference, and it's free!

92 3.0 5 speed 180K

stock w 4.56 gears, 31's and ADD I used to get around 18 commuting. Best was 23 on a road trip where I had to stay around 50mph for while.

headers, FIPK, ADD with 4.56 gears and 31's I got around 16 commuting. Best was 20 on a road trip.

now with headers, manual hubs, 4.56 gears and 33's I get around 15 commuting. Haven't done any road trips yet.

I have a pretty heavy foot so I'm sure the numbers could be better.

90 3.0 5speed 148,000 stock 31s and 4.56 i get 12-13MPG ALL and i mean ALL city driving. my truck has seen the freeway three times. once bringing it back from where i bought it. another taking it to the guy that we bought it from so he could replace the starter. and there was one other time.

i would really like to know how other people are getting between 15-19mpg. i would LOVE to get that.

4runners generally don't get as good of mileage as pickups as far as my understanding goes, probably because they weigh a little more initially (as far as I know, could be wrong), although I think the pickup's have a higher GVW (again, could be wrong, but what I suspect, haven't researched the exact specs).

Assuming your truck is tuned up, air filter, spark plugs, etc, etc. you could try switching to synthetic, that might help a little. How are your emissions components (cat, O2 sensor, etc.).

The other thing to note is you may have excess carbon build up- something a good highway drive or two around 65-75 MPH might help remove.

my truck is fully tuned from when i bought it less than 2 months ago. all toyota parts. im not sure what kind of shape the cat or O2 sensor are in. you can just wait for the cat to be cold and bang on it to see if anything is broken and rattling inside right? how would you know/test if the 02 or cat are workin right?

1990 3.0 5spd,134,000, Michelin LTX A/T 31 x 10.5 x 15, stock suspension, ADD. I ran 2 full tanks through the runner, combo of city and highway driving, I squeezed 522 miles from 29.6 gallons. The math says 17.63 mpg. I could have probably went another 10 miles or so. This is with me rarely going over 3500 rpm in any gear and getting into 5th whenever possible, as soon as possible. I have a set of Aisins going on this weekend, curious to see how much difference they make.

just got back from a trip pulling a utility trailer... took the roof rack off and i ended up 16-19MPG.

after a feul filter and a new free flow cat and 02 sensor...im hoping to break into 21 or 22 mpg.

15.5 MPG city only, 12 MPG or so trail only ... average of several tanks.

ODO very close checking with mile markers on hwy.

1994 SR5, 146k miles, stock with 31's. I get 21-23.5 MPG in mixed driving, though on the highway I leave the cruise control set at about 66 MPH. A/C is running about half the time.

Dose an auto really kill your gas mileage that bad????? I got a stock 95 4Runner 3.slow, auto, $x$, 31's on 15x10 aluminum rims and 4.88's and I get 11mpg. WTF!!!!

I used to get 11-12 around town with 31's on my 92 3.0 auto 4runner w/ 4.56 gears. That was in the winter with no A/C running. Did a complete tune-up: NGK plugs, new plug wires, distrib cap and rotor, cleaned the TB with TB cleaner, aired up the tires to 35 lbs. Routinely get 14.3 around town, now -- around 21 and change on the highway.

i'm going to resurrect this because i'm bored at work so i made a pretty graph....

it's a cumulative probablility graph. when looking at this, it's best to compare the median values (the 50% mark on the Y-axis). The curves are in order in the legend from stock (august 2005) to present (april 2006). I haven't input my last 5 or so tanks of gas yet. I'm expecting the ISR curve to look a little better afterwards.



The graph was made with gnuplot....it's pretty cool for shareware.

16-18mpg combined - 15 minute commute in Philly - half is HWY at 65mph on a 3.0 5 spd SR5 4Runner with 4 inch IFS lift.
K&N Filter otherwise stock engine and exhaust.
32" Bridgestone dueler A/T Revo tires (P-metric equivalent) on 16" steel wheels (I've calculated this to account for 5% reduction in total miles on the odometer (for every 19 miles of odometer I actually traveled 20))
Current Odometer: 211,095 miles.

the electric fan doesn't suprise me as any gain would be minimal. The manual hubs is about what others have ben experiancing. The exhuast doesn't suprise me all that much as the stock toyota exhaust is pretty good to start with & it doesn't take much to mess it up.

The big suprise is the ISR mod. Why did it go down? Are you stepping on it more? What mod did you do? Do you feel more power with it or no difference? Makes me wonder whether to ditch mine & do a snorkle - or would that kill it as well? Is it an open filter?
