22rte swap

i was at the junk yard recently and found a 22rte in i think was an '86 pickup. great looking engine, no leaks, still runs. Guy told me the whole engine, all wiring, and computer was mine for $400...doesn't that sound reasonable?

so i was thinking...should i throw it in my '88 22re 4x4? its my DD but i also wheel the out of it, mud and puddles are fun...(but the stock turbo mount is way down in the engine compartment but i remember seeing an aftermarket mani. that puts it up by the valve cover) but i would like that extra power pulling hills and just everywhere else. is the turbo engine good for wheelin or am i takin a risk putting it through that kinda stuff?

the other option i was thinkin of was finding an older 2wd to throw it in...i know its not a big powerful turbo'd engine but would just be a fun project and i think it would be fun to do a brake stand at a light and be spoolin up in my lil yota

so what do u guys think?

sounds reasonable to me, but why was the truck in the junk yard to begin with. I don't usually like grabbing motors from yard without pulling them from a wrecked vehicle.

Lets see. 135 hp (22rte) vs 112 hp (22re) mm... 173 ft/lbs torque (22rte) vs 142 ft/lbs torque (22re).
Not "brake stand" worthy. but more power for sure. Turbo bragging rights to boot. They had a problem of blowing the head gasket, but could be mostly taken care of with head studs instead of bolts and a proper HG. The ct20 turbos were weak and prone to cracking and leaking. Parts difficult to find. Can be modded to get decent power. either the 5mgte or 7mgte turbo (cant remember which) is mostly plug and play. CT26 I believe.

Is it worth it? Thats depends on you. Do you have at least $400 to spend? Probably more will be needed. It won't be a simple swap as you will be rewiring just about everything to do with the engine. Yes, you will have the wiring harness, but still. A lot of wires.

I am looking for a 22rte to put in my '95 4runner, but still am debating if I want to do that or not.

yea the truck was rolled, smashed the cab.

i think it would be worth it. and i did my homework on the engine, i read all that about the weak link in those is the HG and the vanes cracked on the turbo.

i'll look into the ct26 and see if i can find one anywhere too.
one of my instructors was a mechanic at toyota for 7 years and he's done a bit of work on the 22r series so i can use him as a resource if i get stuck somewhere but i dont doubt i could make the swap work

If I had the money I would go for it for the $400. whats the worst that could happen? the motor needs a rebuild? well I am sure yours probably might not be too far behind. SO I wouldn't use that factor to decide. However you did say it's yur daily driver. I doubt this would be something that could be done in a weekend. Old motor out new motor in if going from 22re to 22re yes, but you will have to use the new wiring harness which might get a little tricky.

good call ocdropzone, had not thought about that. will the 4cyl rear hold up to the turbo? Didn't they have the v6 rears in them as well?

looks like they hit the top of it with silver spray paint that's up with that?

yeah that's not bad for $400 for the entire engine IMO

I would STILL go through it and rebuild it though; there's no telling what kind of history it's been through

I don't know about Oregon but I know that if the engine is older then the truck it can't be smog in California, I would check your local laws about the swap too
