22REt Turbo Engine ??

Are these engines prone to blowing head gaskets? What sort of things do I need to be aware of with this engine? I'm thinking about buying an 85 PU with 150K miles on a 22re turbo...

Any help is appreciated

Trevor

In the mean time I'll try searching the threads.....

that a 2wd truck? i don't think any '85 4x4s had the RTE, but i could definitely be wrong knowing toyota.

they're good engines, but the factory CT-20 turbo is kind of a cheesy unit. if it's in good condition, consider buying it. if the turbo is shot, might be a good idea to keep looking unless you want to replace it with a better unit like a garrett t3.

if it blows a head gasket, i'd replace it with a good gasket(rock or some kind of metal one) and use ARP head studs since you can torque them to 80lbs rather than the stock head bolt's 50lbs. makes it harder to pop a gasket

It's a good engine, again, just watch the turbo. We have an 87 PU with the turbo, and it is great.

...so I just did a Carfax and it indicates the motor type as:

2.4L L4 OR 2BBL -- IS THIS A TURBO?????

It doesn't say anyhting about it being a turbo... I wonder if it's an aftermarket or non OEM turbo?? Or do i just not know a damn thing??

It probably diddnt come that way from the factory. Either had an RET engine swapped in, or put a turbo onto a RE motor. I dont beleve 85 4x4's ever had the RET.

Carfax shows it had a 22r carb.

I believe the turbo for a 4x4 was only for 86 and 87. If your lucky he just has the date wrong. I have an '87 4x4 Turbo. I haven't even driven it maybe 400 miles and the timing chain broke.. A shop worked on it right before I got it and they did bad work.

there were '85 trucks with the turbo, but they were few and far between.

i don't know if the turbo would show up on a vin check though, i don't know much about that. it's still a 4 cylinder 2.4l engine though.

The auto tranny has its own ECM separate from the main one.

Red face

Head gasket problems seem to crop up when the owner adds a boost control and can`t keep there foot out of it after that.

-Turbo trucks came in 86, and 87. There were SOME late 85 turbo trucks, but they were all IFS early 86 model rigs.

-The 22R-TE came in both 2wd, and 4wd.

-The 22R-TE auto is the A340H, same as the V6 trucks. It's quite possibly the worst auto for the trucks due to its HUGE parasitic loss. The transfercase is fully hydraulic too.

-22R-TE motors do have head gasket issues, very similar to the 7M-GTE of the same era. Like was stated above, ARP head STUDS are the only way to go.

-The CT-20 turbo on the 22R-TE is prone to failure, and it's very difficult to find replacements, as they were only ever offered on the 22R-TE, and 3T-GTE motors, both of which are rare. A CT-26 turbo off of a 7M-GTE, or 3S-GTE is a near bolt-on, and worthy upgrade.

-The automatic transmission has its own computer, however it does receive a throttle position signal from the main ECU. You can megasquirt it, and live without the signal, or just have MS output the proper signal. It's a 3 bit Gray code type signal for those who are interested.

this says it all... just for the record my truck had over 268,000 almost original miles before it got a complete frame up resto-mod because of some frame rust issues. PO said the transmission was rebuilt once and there may or may not have been a head gasket job done once on it. I'm the third owner as far as I know.. I got rid of the power robbing auto for a R151 out of a previous turbo'd truck I owned (yes a lucky owner of 2 turbo'd trucks). Also had a few spare straight axles sitting around so I put em to good use. The first good frame I could find was a regular cab, so I made my xtra cab fit. After finding the ct 20 exhaust housing cracked in the typical spot I replaced that with a ct26 left over from a previous supra project. Then the motor spun 2 bearings so I pulled that out and gave it a few extra goodies, and now couldn't be happier! Spins the 38's fine even w/ no gears. It's fast for the average Yota on 38's. (but definatly not racecar fast) and I'm certain it's still faster than a stock RE. passing people on the highway is no problem, even going up hill.
