Yesterday I adjusted the valves on my truck-- intake .008 intake, .012 exhaust, with slight drag. After everything was back on, I started it and it sounded worse than before!...well not worse..but different. a bad different. It was making more of a metal-hitting-metal sound- the rocker arms hitting the cam lobes. So i went back in there and tightened them a little more, still .008 in, .012 ex, but with more drag. So I'm wondering how tight you guys adjust them to. should the rocker arms be able to be lifted from contact with the lobes or the valves? or should they be just resting on both? the latter doesnt seem possible and still have .008/.012 clearance. Am I doing something wrong by following my manuals directions? Thanks in advance!

It's possible that your rockers or rocker shafts are a bit worn, in which case they could be what's making the noise. Setting the valve lash properly doesn't take up the slack at the top of the rocker / shaft so when they go loose they go quite loose.
My '88 is set at a loose .007 / .011 and it makes noise too. It seems to be a known problem with 22re's.

I jsut readjsuted mine today. I didnt do a real good job over the weekend, and had it pretty noisy from a few, after adjsuting today they are making normal sounds. You still hear em but it is managable.
