So my HG blew a few weeks back and I may need to get it fixed sooner than thought. I was originally going to wait until I got back from overseas, but due to military paperwork I might not be leaving for another month, and my wife really wants her runner back...

So, a HG is a pretty easy fix, but at 160K I am seriously considering just rebuilding the whole thing...its not really that much more...

What have you guys paid to have a stock long block tore down, machined, cleaned, and putback together??? I can do the rest, I could do it all from a short block up, but long block is soooo much less work..

What do y'all thing... or should I just fix the HG (along with clean/match the injectors, clean intake, clean head, new timing chain, valve job, and h20 pump...and leave the bottom end?)

I had my 22RE completely rebuilt...parts aren't bad...it is the labor that gets you. Expect $2K plus...depending on who does the work. I went with a more expensive mechanic that I trusted and whom also guaranteed the build 12 months unlimited mileage no questions asked. After 7500 miles on the engine since the rebuild...best running engine I own that will run another 200K.

IMO, rebuild the whole thing while you are in there and having work done. To put a new top end with that mileage on an old bottom end is like having rotten teeth and only getting top dentures.

Thats kinda what I was thinking.... there is a local block and head shop where the owner/mechanic drives a late 80's with a 22RE... makes me feel a little better...

i don't know about the labor costs, but to completely redo my 22RE with an EB street R/V head and cam, it ran me a little under $1200 with the costs of machining.

How does that engine compare to stock? pwr and mileage?

I had a TRD Stage II cam in my 95, all it gave me was horrible mileage, so I am inclined to rebuild this one stock....

Im into my rebuild for around $600 CANADIAN.

Used engine $100 (To rebuild the block while the truck was at a buddies farm)

Machine Shop
Acid Cleaned, hone cylinders
New Piston Rings, ( I got lucky as the engine I bought had already been bored over .05)


Stuff from engine builder:

Master Engine Rebuild Kit.
Timing Chain Cover, Timing Chain, Water Pump, Oil Pump, head gasket, head bolts


Take your time and do it yourself its pretty straight forward

Just called the local block and head shop, guy dirves a 22RE. 1500 to have a long block given back to me... new pistons/rings/bearings/timing chain w/metal guides/valves/springs/RV cam/etc etc/// $1500, and for another $180 3yr unlimited mileage warrenty. Seems pretty good to me..

forgot to ask about injectors...has to be a local injector shop....

as for injectors Cruzin can turn them around fairly quick. he did all 18 i sent him in about a week.

Just called the place the rebuild shop reccommended, 16/ea plus parts. sonicly cleaned and match flowed.... is that a good price?

Same here I, rebuilt mine for a total of $600.00 including parts and machining.

Are you putting it backtogether yourself, or it that a price for a long block? By the price difference I am guessing you'll get a short block from a machine shop right?

It cost me around $900 to do mine but $472 of that was machine work. I bought a engbldr kit with RV cam, new fuel filter, oil filter, oil, coil, plugs, clutch, belts and some other things but I did it myself and I got almost 700 miles on it and so far no problems just need to adjust the valves and thats about it...

Mine cost about 1,800 for the short block rebuild and new head and total after wires/loom and etc parts was probably 2,200.

So, from Wabbit's post, that would explain my 210k mile motor is now burning a quart of oil between fillups after I did the headgasket and got the head totally reworked

I'm trying to wrap my brain around very nearly the same issue right now... Not the headgasket, so its not as much of an emergency, but still in need of some "refreshing".

Once I factor in the $600+ cost of rebuilding and my decidedly questionable mechanicking skills, $1000 for a professionally built long block from a local shop (http://www.citymotorsupply.com/) sounds like a deal to me. It is worth the extra $400 to me to not have to tear it down, haul parts around to machine shops, reassemble, check tolerances, etc... Just pull intake and exhaust, switch over some covers and clutch, then drop it back in.

But that's just me.

Does anyone know if you can still buy crate 22RE's? Or if you ever could? I was just wondering... I am watching the truck stuff on Spike and they got a GM crate 350 for 1500, I cant imagine a crate 22RE could be more... but probally is :-)
