22re Rebuild 88 4Runner

So here is my piece of junk guys . I started gutting it before I took the pics but you aren't missing anything good. I never liked 4runners and I bought this one for parts but after thinking about . I thought it would be sick to have a 4runner to take on adventures . Problem is it looks like crap but that's okay because that's my specialty . What isn't is engines .currently sitting in the bay is an ol rod knocking 22re. Now I have anotjer 22re that SUPPOSEDLY works. But I was thinking why not rebuild this one? Could be fun . I've never done a rebuild but I love learning more than what I already know . So if anyone has any tips , let's hear em! P.S of course I could pay someone to do it but that's no fun!

either rear of valve cover is leaking, or the rear main is leaking. the inside of the bellhousing is coated in oil.

Also could be gear oil from the transmission input shaft seal. I found the best way to clean it is to pull the bellhousing, that way you don't have to scrub it while laying down.

Lotsa good tips out there in the rebuild threads, but here's some basic ones that you may already know: don't miss any intake manifold or timing cover bolts on tear-down. There's a few not-so-obvious ones hiding in there. Also important, especially if you intend on reusing the head, is to carefully follow the unbolting pattern: it's exactly opposite of the install pattern. Work from the outer bolts in and only give each bolt a half turn before moving to the next one.

Good luck, looks fun.

It's not the rear main or vavle cover , I forget what it's called but I'll take a picture of exactly where it's leaking when I get home from work. And yea I've been thinking about it and I have that spare engine sitting there and I'm really thinking about just switching it in there . Im not sure yet .

that's from the valve cover. either the half-moon or gasket.

Wow, lucky they didn't let go! Does it look like the clutch disk was wearing even on the flywheel and pressure plate? As you probably know, those bolts get torqued to 80 ft/lbs and secured with threadlocker.

the flywheel looks fine but the bolt that holds the sandwich plate is toast. They used one that had a bigger head and it didnt have enough clearance so when the flywheel rotated , it cut off the head. Hopefully it wont be too much of a pain to get out. And that infamous allen bolt on the intake manifold was already stripped. All fun things

Shouldn't be too bad getting the sandwich plate bolts out. New correct ones aren't hard to find. I got mine from the 22reperformance.com website because they list odd small parts like that, but I'm sure you can get them elsewhere.

My t-stat bolt was also stripped. What I did was drill it out in stepped increments until the allen bolt head broke loose (be careful to always stay inside the recessed Allen fitting or you'll destroy the manifold), then I slid the intake off and got the rest of the bolt out with locking pliers.
