22re head gasket; Corroded Head, now what?
After months of sitting in the driveway I decided it was time to tear into the 22re and see what happened. I posted previously about burning coolant, so I bought a head gasket set from engnbldr. Once I finally got the head off, I noticed it was weak in 3 spots. More importantly tho, look how corroded the water jackets are. Pictured is the worst one. Was this a defect in the head? I am very hesitant about this sealing with a new gasket. Is this head junk? What is the best bang for the buck? Maybe I'm being paranoid and this is typical? This is a $500 dollar truck so I don't want to get out of control on my spending, the truck isn't really worth it. Thanks Scott

it looks like the compression sealing ring of the Head gasket would be affected by the corrosion, personally I would find another head.
you can get a used one for under $100 just check it for warps with a straight edge, clean up the valves, new valve seals, and lap the valve seats.
you can get a brand new stock replacement head ready to drop in from engnbldr.com for around $300

Thanks for the opinion, yea the sealing ring goes right thru the corrosion on this one. I don't think this would last long if I slapped a gasket under it. I guess I will be looking for a head in the Central Ohio area. Anyone have a spare?

or you could get premium internals and shop at 22re.com.
x2 on replacing the head however.

Dont forget the part about $500 dollar truck... I did however find a local head with 3k miles on it. It is from a 92 celica. Pardon the lack of knowledge here, but will this work on my truck? Thanks Scott

+1 on replacing the head.
I know it's a $500 truck, but at least put $13 worth of antifreeze and distilled water in it or the engine will continue to corrode. Straight water is a no-no.
