[quote=Dirt Driver;52015893]Or divide miles driven by 0.878. Same result and eliminates a step.

Not correct, you would have to (per my example) multiply by 1.14 to correct your mileage. If your stock tire was 33" and you are running 29" then yes you would divide your mileage by .878 to correct.

Try that and you'll get the same number either way, which means the correction for 33" --> 29" tires will be wrong.

Here is an example for an odo calibrated for 29s when the truck is on 33s and the trip meter says 200 miles:

Name: steps-inverted.gif
Views: 3771
Size: 2.4 KB

Actual distance traveled would be ≈227.6mi.

Do you see why it doesn't matter? When the fraction in the denominator is pulled out in front and used to multiply, it must be flipped over. That is why multiplying by 33/29 is the same as dividing by 29/33.

My bad, I mistakenly read "divide" as "multiply" in your post. It all makes sense now. I am just curious whether people are posting their actual corrected mileage vs. what their odometer is reading since there are a lot of rigs with oversized tires.

92 Pickup extra cab, 22re, 15x30x9.5, mileage varies on how i drive but typically about 15-17mpg. No matter how hard i try i end up shifting around 4500-5k rpm because everyone knows how much power 22re's have lol

It's been a while since anyone has posted in this thread but, I have an 86' 4runner with 237,078 miles on it with stock 4.10's and 31 inch tires. I've been averaging about 21.4 mpg, which is great on a 28 year old truck. Best I've seen is 23 and worst has been 17. Love my truck.

Running a Garret GT28rs with 300cc injectors 8.0:1 comp with mild port work mild cam and MSpnp. I get on average around 16 if I can keep my foot out of the gas. If I get the turbo spooling I average around 13-14. Keep in mind that's only my average.

That's the kind of mileage my PreRunner gets, but with a worse average and no 4wd to justify it. That is why I'm going back to a regular 2wd, either a '98-04 Taco or '89-94 pickup.

1990 22RE 5 spd single cab 4x4 180k+.

In town and highway I do the same: 24mpg. Stock gearing, 265/75R17 which is about 31.6" x 10.5ish"

According to the truck it gets just over 20, but according to GPS mileage it's 24. I calibrated it by driving from one place to the next and put it into google maps to get the actual distance.

I imagine I get close to stock mileage because though the tires are larger and the drag coefficient goes up, bringing the revs down doing 70mph does its part.

ok, Huckm80 I am trying to figure this out. I think my tank is 15 gallons.(think) I get between 250 and 280 out of a tank on my 265/75/15(30.5 or so). truck has 4.10 gears and sticker on doorjam reads 225/75/15(28.3). so its 280 over 1 multiplied by 30.5 over 28.3 = 301.76. so 301.76 divided by 15 = 20.1 mpg. is that right?

You can't go by the guage and you can't go by the tank size.

The only way to get a realistic fuel economy number is to have a reasonably accurate way of knowing how far you traveled and how many gallons were used to do it. Your actual tire circumference(not calculated from the sidewall #s) and engine RPM can be used to determine speed and distance. Use mile markers on a highway if you have to.

22re MPG

I have a stock 93 toyota pickup 2wd an I get an average of 22 mpg with a lot of in town driving. On the highway I can get ~29 mpg @70 mph with a slight exhaust leak with AC. Bet low 30's is posable if you drive slower.

Around town I don't want to guess - stock gearing and 33's and I'd say MAYBE 15 mpg. On highway tanks though this does quite well. My last road trip including gravel road driving got 23.5mpg over roughly 2000 miles. I think the 33's really help this by lowering RPM along with a young torquey motor.

I think it's worth noting you can't really get accurate mileage out of one tank. Too many variables - wind, hills, different gas pumps flipping off at different tank levels, etc. You have to keep track over several tanks to get an idea of how the truck is doing.

I don't see how so many people get such good mileage... I've never seen better than 24 mpg out of a Toyota and that was my 2004 2wd Tacoma with the 2rz...

I've been able to coax decent mileage as long as I keep it around 60mph and there's no headwind. I agree that over 25mpg out of a 4x4 all the time seems far fetched. And you gotta ask how was it measured? If it isn't GPS I don't trust it.
