You're not alone SB, we rebuilt Rustbucket's 22re, and its been like a new one since, other than a bit of a weird knock... I rebuilt mine, same care, and went through the break in steps. Now, with close to 15,000 miles on it, I still dump a quart of oil in every 500 miles minimum. I had to change the sparkplugs recently because of all the buildup on em. Weird.
I have another new 22re I'm going to drop in this spring, and then we'll find out whats wrong when I tear this one back apart.... I'll let ya know.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I thought I'd mention it. Could a leaky baffle gasket in the valve cover be allowing oil to be sucked in through the PCV system?

Most rebuilders clean the valve cover, sometimes *very* thoroughly, maybe even enough to compromise that gasket. Parts of mine flushed out. If oil can get slopped up top near the PCV valve, seems to me that this could be a problem.

that's interesting; the top of my cover allways seems to be damp with oil...

Any updates, Bleeder?

I plan to fire up my rebuild the day after tomorrow. This thread has been sticking in the back of my mind.

did you baby your motor when it was first put together? if you did thats why you are using oil, your rings arnt set properly yet. it may take up to 10k miles before your rings will set i you dont pressure set them in the first place.

Just curious, and this probably isn't related, but what did your ring gaps measure?

to my knowledge, he NEVER changed the oil on that car once it's started loosing oil, and he drove it for AT LEAST 4 years like that through high school
Ha!

A friend of mines mid 90's dodge 318 4x4 used to be like that. Fill up the oil and check the gas

right now, I switched to the 15w40, and have stuck with that, and it seems to be going through less; about 1 to 1 1/2 quarts between oil changes

well, it idled for probably 10 minutes after first startup, then I drove it like I stole it down to the gas station (with the hood off still ) because it was running on fumes, and stayed pretty hard on it for the next few days.

isn't 15 w an impediment to good start up oil flow?

actually it made the motor more quiet during startups when it's cold
