I have a 1989 Regular Cab pickup with a 22re that is making some weird clattering noises. It was originally an automatic truck but I we converted it to a 5speed g58 trans. Currently the engine has 285,000km, does not burn oil or coolant.
On initial startup (cold) it makes a loud clattering sound momentarily before settling out but revving quite high. eventually the idle comes down to a comfortable rpm (no Tach, so not sure of actually rpm).
My main concern is the clattering sound it make with no load on the engine at high rpm. If I'm on the throttle it sounds fine until the speed catches up with the throttle and it starts to clatter. If I fully let off the throttle it also does NOT make the sound. It only seems to appear when I'm on the throttle but not enough to be accelerating, just maintaining.
as I'm typing and read it back it doesn't make a lot of sense, seems to be hard to explain.

any one have any insight on this?

 

Check/adjust your valves, then tell post up and tell us if the noise is still there. There should be a higher cold idle, so it sounds like your "high idle" might just be normal cold operation.

 

Feeling stupid....it was low on oil. sister has been driving it for the last couple of months so I forgot to check on it. needed a couple quarts and its all good. I'll check the valves anyways, probably about time.
