22re camshaft

I know this has been asked but wanting fresh opinions on which camshaft to go with. 90 model 22re, auto trans, 456 gears. have done the supra air flow conversion. truck is riding on 33's mainly a daily driver with some short interstate runs "less than 20miles." building a fresh engine to go in her as the orignal has 330k and is using oil. thanks for you time kevin G

I think it would depend on how your auto transmission likes to drive. Are you set on the auto? because going to a proper transmission will net you more power than a cam. If you are set on the auto, then does it like to drive at high or low RPMs?
The 261 cam from ENGNBLDR I believe increases power at the low rev range, so that'd be the choice if your auto likes low revs, I'm guessing the 268 cam increases power at the top of the rev range, which would be ideal if your transmission shifts late. Food for thought.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, just going from memory here and guessing what would be ideal in an auto (never driven in one).

i am not set on the auto but that is what is in the truck and i have not made my mind up to convert this to a 5speed truck as it is a daily driver not my play toy. Conversion would require me to find trans, pedals, master and slave and several extra hours. would rather cam and header it as i am going in with the new and just drive it another 300k +. just trying to get the best bag for my buck. hoping someone with a auto truck would chime in on a good cam selection for this little engine.

recent pic of the old truck..

Just suggesting because I am pretty certain the 5 speed will net more power than a cam and exhaust because of a more efficient power transfer to the wheels. Example, I drove a V6 turbo chrysler van which was slower than my 22re because the transmission was absolute garbage. You do have to want to drive a manual transmission though. Easy choice for me, but each to his own.

LOL...really has nothing to do with wanting to drive a stick. My 93 stang is stick as well as my mountian truck. and i agree it would be much better but it is a matter of locating parts to convert it over.

Gotcha, well up to you then, but if it's possible to find the parts I'd think it's a better use of the money, but then again you could do the cam and exhaust now while you have it apart for the rebuild and the 5 speed conversion later

I have a 1993 xtra-cab 4wd with an automatic transmission. the Engnbldr.com Torquer Cam was a nice bump in power and I picked up 1-2 mpg. While you're in there, install their metal timing chain guide too.

the 261 in mine was decent with the auto. the auto, however, is not decent and has since become a boat anchor.

272, 261 and 268 are the ENGNBLDR cams.
