22re blown head gasket options

Quick and simple question for all.
92 Toyota 4wd 22re, overheated (I believe the old water pump to be the culprit), blew out around cylinder 4, flooded the case with coolant.

Should I just go get a $700 replacement long block (reman with warranty) or should I do a teardown, have the head checked, and make the repairs?

Pros....Cons.....opinions welcomed, especially comparisons from others experiences.

$700 for a rebuilt long block sounds really cheap.Some times the fine print on the warranty can be quite interesting in when you can get a claim paid.

Last I looked it would have cost me around $1200 to $1400 just for parts and machine work.

can you do all the work your self but the machine work?

What is your goal here ?? Quick fix and back driving or get it done right.

How many miles on the Engine ??

head off time to do the timing chain?? pull the engine put in a clutch??

The Big question is just how much money is in the budget just what can you afford to do

Not knowing your mechanical experience and time frame you are looking at, I will add from both sides of my expeience. If it is just the head, I would just do a top end rebuild. As far as a full rebuild I will try to show on both sides. As far as cost and to do it right, you are going to hit around $1100-$1400 either way.

If speed and ease, I suggest getting a motor from United Engine http://www.unitedengine.com/index.ph...mart&Itemid=55 depending on if they want a core and shipping it will cost as mentioned above. I have bought 2 motors from them and my brother has bought one from them as well. All 3 have been great motors. Nothing but good to say about them. Shipping a core is what makes such a big difference. They dont always want a core. Check there homepage for a more completed motor which comes with a timing cover and other things but cost a little more as well.

I am currently rebuilding a motor and I have $300 into for parts and another $400 into machine work and that is just on the block and I didnt get all of the machine work done that I would of liked to have done. I am using a head that I had worked on awhile back, but if I was to have a machine shop to do everything suggested on it, I could probably hit the $11-1400 mark fairly easy. I used Engine Builder ( You will see the name Ted on here and is a great guy to talk to) a reputable parts company.

If you are going to build it yourself, allow a month easy for your time and machine shop time. May sound like I am way off as time wise but this is all from my experience. Most tools you could probably rent if you dont have them. Look up 92Toys Crapped out gotta start somewhere thread. ( My computer is slow or I would post a link). He has some great information on a build. If you do it yourself, you are the warranty, but is bragging rights that you built it

I guess it seems like it would come out about the same either way then. I would like to get it back on the road asap. I can do all the work, just looking into any real substantial differences between the replacement vs repair. Cost, time, labor, etc.
