Get a lightweight tonneau cover and if you want to be blinging get some lightweight rims, and an e-fan.
You should see a 1-2mpg improvement and better acceleration as well.

 

Woah... 27 is twice what I get in my 22RE. I've never seen a 2wd Toyota pickup get 27 mpg. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen any pickup get 27 mpg. Amazing.

 

A buddy of mine gets 30 regularly in his 22re. it is single cab, stock everything.

Something I've noticed about mine is that it has a low-rpm stumble that clears out as it warms up. My old man's '94 did the same thing as it racked up the miles. I don't recall how or if it was fixed.

Like I said, I do have a shell to put on the back. Since 90% of my driving is flat freeway, I doubt the weight wil be a factor. Problem is that the shell has no side windows and it's like driving a windowless van with it on. Luckily I got some to install. I'm also going to make sure the tire pressure is high enough. So far I have about 190mi and the needle is right on the 1/2 mark, but I have to check it officially to know for sure.

 

I got 29.8mpg on my last trip to charleston, sc. This was with windows up, tailgate down and running on 87 octane gas. I kept a steady 65mph throughout the trip, amazing.

 

There was an aftermarket turbo kit "TEC" I think for the 22RTE back in the day. It improved gas mileage (advertised) by 2-3mpg. I can't find the original ad, but it's out on the web somewhere.

You could go turbo.. If you keep your foot out of it... A turbo increases the volumemetric efficiency of your motor... :-)
BTW, a moderate turbo can be done at a moderate price.. :-)
Moderate boost and timing control can prevent the need for premium gas.

 

27 mpg??!?!?! I have the 3.4L but Im doing good if I break 18 mpg.

 

27 mpg is really good.. The highest I've gotten is about 22 (4wd).
My junk seems to do best between 55-65mph.. You know, the space age aerodynamics and all...

How do you drive mainly? In town, on the highway? How fast? You could always regear to 3.90 for highway driving... A diff is about $50 and 2 hours of your time to install / give or take.

 

Turbocharging is a double-edged sword. It may reduce pumping losses in certain situations when not spooled up, but the economy takes a dump whenever in boost. Then there's the issue of bigger injectors and the reduced resolution of control at low pulsewidths coupled with a narrow-band O2 sensor. I already have a MegaSquirt and a wideband is on the way, but neither are going in the truck. I could tune it for "ragged-edge" lean cruise, but it would take a really long time to pay for the $380 just with gas savings.

To make matters worse, I have to smog this thing. In CA, that means no mods unless they are officialy 50-state legal or can be easily hidden from the tester. AFAIK, there are no 50-state turbos or blowers currently available for 22REs.

I'm going to fill it up today and see how well I've been doing. 45mph up the Grapevine with the trucks is killing me....

And the results are in........I did 29.1mpg as of today. 319mi on 10.95gal. I reduced my A/C useage, short-shifted, and did mostly ~70mph. There was about 40mi of canyon driving in there also. I'm probably not going to break 30 this go around, but if 29 was that easy, 30 is very possible.

 

I wish I got 27mpg in my truck! Try 18 mpg and complain!!!! You lucky........person.

 

I agree... my 3.slow gets around 16-18 city and 20-21 highway.... i drive around 70 miles per day in mostly city traffic...

of course, i have 4WD and dont go very easy on the accel. you should be glad to get 29 in any truck.

 

Me too, most I ever got in my T100 was 17-18mpg city! The thing is bone stock too!

Dang you guys, I got 24mpg out of my old 180k '89 Mustang 5.0. Then again, I get 24 out of my current Mustang SVO which is a 2.3L turbo :pat:. My folks get 18 out of their worn-out '93 Explorer(4.0L) and it got 21 when it was new.

I'm trying for 30mpg this week in the Toilet.....eh, I mean Toyota. The tires only had between 20 and 25psi on them, so I brought them up to 25 in the rear and 30 on the front(tires rated at 35psi). My solid-sided shell now has full-length slider windows, so puting it on should help on the highway, which will happen as soon as the pass-though rear window goes in.

Setup? Mods? Average speed? How did you do it?

 

I got 23.4 in my 4x4, automatic truck on a 70 mph highway trip last weekend. The AC can stay off this time of year, and the air being cooler adds a little extra power for some reason, that someone here can explain, I imagine.

Going to haul a trailer 400 miles tomorrow, that should drop the mileage down a bit.

I understand that tailgate down is worse than up.
