If you can get the 3rd members out, just bring those, save some bucks.

Thanks! Would love to be able to do something like that unfortunately taking out the 3rds is probably more than I can handle. So $1200 for drive in drive out is too much? What should it cost?

well not to much if you REALLY need it done, the rear is simple. Front more involved if its IFS.

Red face

thing to remember is this a 4 cylinder engine no matter what you do and how much $$$$ you spend your not going to gain a lot more horse power .

Then again these 22 r series engines get the most bang for the buck in head work look at a engine builder head .

With those tires you do need to regear to get the ratio down to around where it would be with stock tires

Yeah, I just want it to be faster... don't really need it to tow anything and don't do much off-roading. It's tough even merging onto the highway the as slow as it is right now!

What about dropping down to a smaller tire, since you don't do much off-roading? Like a 235/75/15?
You would see an increase in power, driveability, and likely an increase in fuel economy as well.
You could always add an electric locker out of a Tacoma if you wanted to make it more capable off-road.

why dont you go to pick n pull and pull the rear third, and front axle from a 90-95 runner with 4.56s or the stock 4.88 shouldnt cost much more than $300. I regeard my 85 pickup with two 4runner thirds 4.88s. I think you would be able to handle it if you read about it first. then with the money you saved you can buy a header!

Thanks for the advice! Still debating on what to do? I think I'm leaning towards the 4.56's instead of the 4.88's since I'm running 31's.

Brindlepitt22 where you happy with the 4.88's? What size tire were you running?

I am very happy with my 4.88 I can finaly hold 5th! up hills! with 33s, about 3000 rpms at 70mph. but for you running 31s if you are going the pick n pull route I would go 4.56s But if you are going to have a shop do it or buying thirds somewere else I would definetly go 4.88. It would be a major waste of money to have a shop put in 4.56s. wich ever one you go with you will be VERY happy, compared to buying a header. After I put on my header and 2 1/4 pipe all the way back the gains were a joke compared to regearing. So regear First, good luck!

Thanks! I was looking at doing a header, complete exhaust system and K & N but was told by a buddy that regearing would make a bigger difference. Plus the bolt-on's were cheaper than regearing at the local driveline shop. Still can't get over the $1200 estimate to do it for me. Checked with the pick n pulls around here and they had nothing?

Teuf- got any pics of your chrome bumper/grill? Mine came with black and I painted the front and rear bumper a dark gray color several years ago. Been thinking of putting chrome on the front and rear. Are your door & tailgate handles chrome? What about the trim around your windshield? Might go for a different look...

Just sent Zuk an email. No way I'd be able to do the work myself!!! I wonder if I can buy the gears and stuff from him and then have them installed locally?

Thanks for your help

I'd say get your gears and install kit's from WABFAB get him to ship them to ZUK, pull your 3rd's put them in bucket's and ship them to ZUK have him set them up and ship them back to you and then you will know they are set up correctly and it should come in somewhere around $6-$800 bucks total I would think.

FROM WABFAB'S SITE

Gear set's
Set 4cyl 4.88 - $175 + $25 S/H x 2

install kit's
4cyl - $99 + $15 S/H x2

Solid Pinion Spacer Kit,
4cyl - $19 + $5 S/H

I bet if you talked to BRAIN he would set you up a deal on the shipping as a package deal and maybe even a package deal on the gears and install kits.

Then pull your 3rd's send them to ZUK and have him set them up and ship them back to you and reinstall them yourself you get top quality installs and still come in under what the local shop quoted you.

Thanks for the advice! Only problem is I just reviewed how to remove the 3rds on the forum here and there's no way I can handle that kind of job. Got a reply from ZUK and I'm trying to figure out what my other options are. Want to have them done right and believe ZUK does a great job! Wondering if I can have him send me assembled 3rd members for front and rear and then can I take them to shop here locally to install? Basically have him work his magic with the gears so I know it's done right and then get a place close to home put in his work. Think this is possible?
