ok so its kinda weird just started with the cold weather when im driving at a constant speed for awhile then throw it in neutral to stop then engine goes to idle and coughs and studders and trys to stall for a few seconds and then idles normal. so i have a theory on what it is the temp gauge is showing it at normal operating temps but radiator is cold to the touch and the hole engine its self is not much warmer now the outside temp is in the teens and single digits so what im thinking is with the cold temps the engine is staying perty cold its self from going at freeway speeds at those temps and from what i have heard the choke has a spring on it like a thermometer to know the engine temp to gauge the amount of choke so with the engine cold to the touch the choke is running on on the freeway and when i decelerate its running to rich and tries to stall. does that make any sence? checked the thermo to make sure its opening cause of the cold radiator and its working and i have hot air on the heater and its not over heating. also why i think it might be choke related is the gas millage has dropped a lot sence it has started doing that.

 

To check your theory block the grille with something to stop the air flow, just a thought.

 

or get a heat gun, the engine should be roughly what temperature the thermostat is rated at. again, it should be in that ballpark, i doubt it will be exactly 180F, or 160F, or 190F. i think you can get a heat gun at sears for like 30 bucks

 

ya checked it agian today after i got home from work engine is luke warm radiator is stone cold the hose returning hot water from the engine is warm and the houseing after the thermo is crazy hot so it seems its running at temp and is opening or is atleast dont think its stuck open is seems so warm up quick. so it just seems the little 22r cant keep the whole block very warm when its very cold out side and thats @$%#ing with my carb?

 

You do have a 190F thermostat installed (factory recommendation)?
Have you checked if fan clutch is not disengaging at cold temps?

 

idk if stock one is still in there or not but didnt have this problem last year but fan clutch is a very good idea actually didnt think of that one how do u go about finding if thats the problem if it is i have a electric taures fan i have laying around waiting to go in there any ways a good excuse to put it in
