(3) 3.0 Questions: Timming, Worn Throttle Body springs, Fan Clutch

1: How do you set timming correctly as the FSM says to set the idle at 800 rpm, then move the distributor to read 10* BTDC? When I move the distributor, the engine rpm increases. Do you first set the engine at 800, move the distributor so you see 10*, then reset the rpms at 800? I think I have been setting my timming correctly, but am not sure.

2nd question: My engine some times with idle low, around 500 rpms. If I tap the pedal lightly, the rpms will pick back up and stay where they should. Are the springs on the Throttle Body maybe worn out and not putting om enough return tension? I have the TPS set correctly, and everything seems ok. It dosn't search for an idle, it just seems that maybe the throttle is going to low at times.

3: At what temp should the fan clutch engage? Mine seems to be engaged from the moment I start the car COLD.

Any ideas?

It is normal for your idle to go up when you advance the timing. Just turn the idle back down to 800 and recheck the timing to be sure its still the same. Make sure you have the data link connector shorted with a wire when you set the timing.

Check to see if there is crud around your throttle body plate. If it is dirty it will make it not close all the way. Also check to see if your throttle cable moves smoothly

When I start my truck up the fan clutch is fully engaged for about one minute and then it will fully disengage until the temp rises and it needs to engage again. My fan clutch is either on or off. Theres not really any in between. If yours is staying engaged all the time then you want to get that fixed. It will kill HP and MPG.
