1st gen 4rnr with sleeper...
I know it's super easy to sleep "inside" the 4rnr, but humor me. Has anyone ever installed/fabbed a roof top sleeper/camper on a 1st gen 4runner? I keep seeing more and more pics with these toppers on the new FJ's, but no searches have yielded results with 4rnrs, at least not old ones. Just thinking...

There was an article in 4wheel drive and sport ute mag awhile back, I have it. I'll scan it for you when I get home. It was a 2nd gen truck (red) with a Canback canvas top and a sleeper top, I dont remember what company. Looked sweet for sure.

I would scour Expo's Toyota section to see if anyone has a roof top tent on a first gen 4Runner.
I am sure someone has done it.

If I run across any pics, I will post them here.
Try this thread, I have seen the thread before, but can not remember if a 1st gen is in it.

Heres that article for those who want to read. Sorry my scanner at home is only B&W.
Not sure if it talks about mounting or support, I didn't read it again, but at least you get a picture of what it would look like on a 1st gen runner, 2nd gen pickup. I do have the other part of the build with the canback install, and that for sure talks about the additional support added.

I would think if you ran plates inside of the shell to hold the fake rain gutters then used Yakima or Thule crossbars, you could mount any roof top tent on the 1st gen 4Runner.
I ran those plates and fake gutters on my '90 truck with a Brahma shell, and the crossbar setup was very strong.
This is about the closest pic I have of it.

But if you drilled into the shell and used the backing plates inside along with the fake gutters, you could setup a good crossbar system to hold any tent.
Not sure since I am not standing before one though if there is enough room to get plates and fake rain gutters installed or not.

Still have not found a roof top tent setup on a 1st gen via

Tents are cheaper and this one is hands down better then a roof tent. Think Mt Everest quality. This is the one I have and its great, Im going to be camping along the way from alaska to washington in the snow.
