1995 4Runner transmission question
So I have a 95 SR5 4WD with the A340H. It looks like everywhere I read it say the H is all one piece and the F can be separated and different transfer cases swapped in. My door tag say I have the 340H but when I get under the truck and look. I see that the tailshaft and transfer case are definitely bolted on and this is not one big case. What am I missing?

The H is hydraulic and chain driven, and the F is gear driven. From what I've read, they are essentially the same transmission they just engage 4x4 differently.

Thank you. So I have done some more research. Looks like the stock ECU manages the transfer case in certain situations. The reason I ask is that I am getting ready to do a 1U swap. I went underneath my 4Runner expecting to see a 1 piece trans/transfer case. I was wondering why people go to the T100 transfer case. Looks like the only real reason is the ECU control of the transfer case.

I just finished up a 3.4 swap in my 91 automatic trans. I went with a 96 t100 ECU because the speed sensor in the transmission won't match with a 3rd gen 4runner ecu. The t100 uses 2 sensor points, which is the same for the A340H that's in our gen 2 4runners, while the newer 4runner uses 4 points. Good luck on the swap. There's a 1U build floating around on this site somewhere.

I have a couple of 1U swaps already in my background. Including getting them legalized here in California. But I have no experience with transfer cases so this is a whole new world for me. I suspect I will end up using the T100 transfer case since its pretty well documented. But I would like to understand how the ECU controls the one I have now. I am really curious to see if I have the skills or maybe the resources to make it work properly behind the 1U.
