1994 truck tranny question (stick)

I just picked up a clean 1994 extended cab toyota four wheel drive. It has the 22r and the 5 speed. The tranny feels good and solid except for one thing. 3rd gear feels on the small side as far as the stick going into that position. I don't know how to explain it. 3rd works fine but you barely have to pull back on the lever and you can pull it out of gear. It hasn't popped out on its own but I'm wondering if my tranny is wore out and needs a rebuild or is this a typical toyota tranny. This if my first yota and besides the tranny issue I love it. Keep in mind too that all other gears feel solid and have more of a position to them if that makes any sense...

if it is not poping out or whining then you don't have a problem. I find that Toy trans are short shifts compaired to other trucks.

The synchronizers could be starting to show some wear, but I wouldn't worry about it until it starts popping out of gear on it's on. In fact, even then, I don't know if I would rebuild. An old friend of mine had a late 80's pickup that only had 2nd and 4th left. He drove it like that for a couple of years.

My 94 truck would pop out of first gear and felt generally sloppy, so I ordered and installed these and it shifts like new again. I ordered a nother set for my R151F that will be swapped into my truck.

When I bought my 90 4x4, it had much the same issue with third gear, except mine was making a whining noise in third gear too. I knew that the tranny was gonna go, but I got a good deal and so decided to buy it anyway. I drove that sucker for almost 4 years before it started popping out of gear often enough to warrant a junkyard tranny. Pretty good since it felt like it was on it's last leg when I bought it!

wow.. i was just going to start a thread on my shifter being sloppy. i guess someone beat me to it

so new seat bushings take the sloppiness out of the stick?
How hard are they to install?
you don't have to drop the tranny right

No guarantees, but for the price, it's sure worth trying the bushings first.

Technically, no. After fighting with mine last night, I was starting to think it would be easier to drop the tranny and remove the shifter than it was to take the shifter off in place LOL.

Be sure to gasket/RTV the shifter base to the splash shield and the splash shield to the top of the tranny or you can get a leak. (that's why I had to take mine off again)
