I recently purchased a 1993 T100 with the 3VZ and R150. It has 195k on it and some issues so I got it cheap! Figured I’d post some pics as I go along in case they’d help anybody or if anyone has suggestions for me. This is my first time venturing this deep in a rebuild so any advice is much appreciated. I’m doing all the work on the ground in my driveway. Anyways, here’s what needs done:
- Head gasket
- TB + WP
- Valve cover seals
- Rear main seal + pilot bearing
- All clutch components
- New fluids all around
- Handbrake non-functional
- Play in idler/pitman arms
- Passenger door is damaged
- probably a lot more….
I started by draining oil and coolant and pulling things to get the heads off. They are currently at a machine shop getting resurfaced. Luckily no cracks and the valves hold compression! Gasket was blown at the #6 cylinder. Getting things cleaned up and ready for the new gaskets. Here are some pics.
Yesterday I pulled the transmission and installed new clutch components. The old stuff was wrecked. The truck broke down on me as I was driving it home because the release bearing seized up… I managed to remove the pilot bearing with a hot dog bun which was cool. Shiny new stuff is in! I also went ahead and serviced the injectors.
New water pump, thermostat, master cylinder, and slave cylinder today. Got the transmission work wrapped up. Everything’s reconnected. Had to zip tie some wiring since the plastic clips broke. I’m thinking I’ll delete the EGR system. I’d be able to remove a lot of crap from the engine bay. Anyone have thoughts on that?
People often mistake Toyota's Emissions systems to being similar to the aweful emissions systems from American Auto manufactures in the 1970s and 1980s. Toyota's emissions systems usually had only a little affect on how the engine performs.
Unless the EGR system is not working and replacement parts are not availabe, I do not see a reason to "delete" the EGR.
Unnless you plan on constantly working in the engine bay after this repair, removing the EGR system to "clean up" the engine bay also has no real benefit.

Thanks! I have a ‘94 Hilux Surf with the 1KZ. I ended up deleting the EGR system on that engine because the amount of carbon buildup in the intake was absurd. This one wasn’t as bad, even with higher miles. As far as I know the EGR components on this truck are functional so maybe I’ll just put it all back in.
Got the truck running again last weekend! The cylinder heads were cleaned and resurfaced. New valve seals installed and lash set at the shop. Spent the weekend putting it back together. Had a bit of a scare when I went to fire it up for the first time. Crank no start… checked for fuel and spark and was good there. After a bit of messing about, I discovered I had installed the distributor on the exhaust stroke. Oops! Took it out, turned engine 360 deg and it fired right up. Truck ran okay, but it was a total dog. This is my first 3VZ and I figured it was just gonna be a slow beast. Turns out in the distributor shenanigans I accidentally switched the wires on plugs 3 and 5! Now it’s really going well. Quicker than I expected honestly. Learned a lot and had fun putting it back together! Now to tackle some other things. I think the PO had run some sort of gasket sealer - I found traces in the coolant passages on the block. The truck runs a bit hot (slightly over half on the gauge). I think I’ll order a new radiator and see if that helps. My assumption is that this one is all gunked up with sealer crud.
