1991 4Runner - how to fix rear key tailgate window electrical
Hi guys. Here's how to fix the non working rear key tailgate window electrical issue.
So, I put the key at the rear key hole to power the rear window down and it doesn't work. I have to use the console switch to get the rear tailgate window down.
Pop the panel off the rear tailgate.
Use the screwdriver to push the lock down on both sides of the rear tailgate, then go to the console switch for the rear tailgate window and bring it up. Make sure you don't go too far otherwise, the rear window will fall off. Just enough so you can access the rear key cylinder.
Remove the small cable that is attached to the rear key cylinder. I found the middle pin corroded so I went to the auto junkyard to ask for the part and they said $60 for that. Well, that was a ripoff, so I went to the electrical store and bought the male-female 3 pin connector for $4.
Next cut off the old male connector, strip the rubber insulation off the wire, REMEMBER to label which old wire goes to the new wire. For example, old blue-white stripe goes to the black, old blue-yellow goes to the yellow, etc in order
Now, solder the old wire to the new wire, then use the electrical tape to cover up the joined wire.
Go back to the rear tailgate, REMEMBER to remove the battery before doing soldering. Do the same thing on the female pin connector.
When you're done, connect the brand new connector and hook up the battery and test using the key to the rear tailgate
Grab a beer and enjoy your hard work done!!
