1990 RWD rear axle seals leaking
I had my truck inspected, and the mechanic found that the rear axle oil seal was leaking. I have the Haynes manual, and it's sadly lacking in detail. I thought that one of the seals required removing the bearing, which I don't have the tools for, but after re-reading, it sounds like the seals can be removed and replaced without special tools. I did check the differential bleeder valve, and it seemed to be working properly (although the cap is nearly rusted through, so I should make a new cap), so I guess it is the seals (285k km). Any advice on replacing the seals? I haven't pulled the hub off for a look myself, to see how much leakage, and whether the brake shoes have gotten oil on them (parking brake holds really well). I don't want to pull the axle apart and find that there's some unmentioned part (non-reusable clip or whatever) that I need, and can't drive to town for. I know I need to buy fresh diff oil.
Also, what are the proper descriptions for the seals, or the part numbers? I'm guessing that the diff one is "inner seal" and the one by the bearing is "outer", but guesses aren't reliable. The guys at Napa couldn't figure out what parts to order, and their web site doesn't list any. Most other sites don't offer correct options for identifying the vehicle. I'm surprised at how hard it is to order the seals.

I did the axle bearing at home without special tools.
You will have to cut the bearing retainer off first. Even if you had all the special Toyota tools you'd have to do that. I used a Dremel and a bunch of cutoff discs, but a bench grinder will work, too. Just be careful not to damage the axle surface what ever method you use.
If your brake shoes have oil on them you'll need to replace. You'll never get the diff oil out of them.
Marlin Crawler had excellent prices on rear axle bearing kits when I got mine a few years back.
Well worth considering doing the inner/outer axle seals on the other side at the same time
