Ok. I guess you are talking about the drive for the dist and offset for the fuel pump. And the top sprocket for the camshaft. To prevent the tensioner from popping out on the bottom end and having to remove a lot of front covers and such. , I put a wedge down in the chain cavity. It can’t drop off the lower sprocket and when I put the top sprocket back on,there is a dot on the sprocket and I made a pic of where that goes. Also the dist rotor will be facing towards the 10 o’clock direction. At least I hope this is how it will work out.

Gasket set got here about 8:30 last night. Worked til 10:30 this morning, Didn’t start on the truck until about 12.. Head back on, torqued, timing sprocket worked out good. Exhaust back on too. I did find what looks like a coin, but says warranty void if removed! Interesting. Was stuck on the back of the head..

Ha! I've seen that exact coin looking symbol on the head of the engine for our 4Runner. Engine was said to be rebuilt in some place in California 12 years ago. I guess my warranty is voided too because I didn't even put that head back on.

Ok. Making progress. Most mechanicals back on. Fuel rail, vacuum rail, some hoses hooked up. Maybe tomorrow, will tackle the vacuum hoses. But have to do yard work at some point. Not in a rush anyway.

Hi:
That coin thing is, for sake of a better word, a fuse of sorts.
It is made from an alloy of Woods metal, and Antimony, and will melt at a temperature that is determined by the amount of each in the alloy mix.
It is very accurate and will show the vendor if the head, or block has been cooked in the case of a warranty claim.
The indication will be the little plug in the center will be missing, and the outer doughnut still attached.
Art.

Smile

That is interesting information...............So if you were to go in and said that the engine blew, and you had no idea that something was wrong...( you had no water in the cooling system for example). and tried to claim faulty equip........guess your goose was cooked so to speak...............

Ok. Putting back the vacuum hoses. Got most hooked back up, but there was one port on top of the carb that did not have anything hooked up, which is why o am asking if anything is supposed to be connected there. Please look at the pic and comment, thanks.

Well, in looking at several pics last night on line, there was one pic of a carb that had that tube blocked. So I did the same. Will send more info tomorrow. But.....SHE IS ALIVE!

OK....got the timing set I think.......had a slight hesitation when you pressed the gas. so adjusted to get rid of that, then adjusted the idle. Took her out and the valves started rattling some so readjusted the timing down and increased the idle....so far its better. I did not change any of the valve settings when I bolted it back on. Hope I am good.

The valves in the 22R type engine rattle a bit. It's just the way it is.
The valves should be set according to the FSM before you go any farther. Once you have the valve lash set correctly, then set the idle to 850. THEN set the timing according to the book. Then check that the idle is still at 850-ish. Pretty close to it.
IIRC, the book also has a procedure for setting the mixture, but to do it, you have to drill out a metal plug to get to the screw.

Anywho, that's the way the book calls to do it all, and I've done it that way any number of times over the years. My truck still runs like a dream. Both of them, actually.
