Holy dead thread revival batman!

As a note, I ran the manufacturer recommended fluid and have had no Ill Effects. I was having some stiff shifting issues before the rebuild when cold, but that must have just been due to the synchro's which were on their way out.

i have a question about GL-5 gear oil whats wrong about using it? because my local auto parts store recommends it for my 1986 toyota 22r 4x4 pickup

It contains corrosive additives that can/will eat the brass synchros.

It apparently corrodes yellow metals, like your synchros. Use the the gl-4 or some high grade stuff. Everyone will have their own opinion of course, but basic gl-4 cheap stuff works fine. I have been using Amsoil synthetic 75-90 gl-4, it has worked flawlessly from 0 deg to 110 deg/f. Its good stuff but pricey.
