Transmission issue, shifter pops out of 1st.
New to this forum and spotted this thread from 2004 and it has to deal with what I'm going though, and I reworded to fit my issues.

Problems started about 6 weeks ago when I was driving home from work. Shifted into 2nd and 2nd gear ground pretty bad. Shook it off as a crappy shift on my part, and told myself to be careful. Nothing happened again for about 3 weeks. Then about a week ago, the truck starts grinding when I would short shift, normally never use the clutch except for first and reverse, (although it seemed most common in 1, 2, &4). I noticed that the shifter started to jump from 1st to neutral as I let the clutch out; I would put it back in first and hold it and we would be on our way. Then it started jumping out of third gear when I let off the gas. That when I thought I would park it and start asking question. I have replaced the cup at the bottom of the shift, but not the nylon shift lever bushing(socket), it look good but who am to say what is ok or not. After I installed the cup and back out of the drive was ok, as soon as I put in first and started to let off the clutch same thing happen, put in back in first held the stick and it pop out and back in and out. put it back in the driveway. goping to order the socket to se if that will fix my issue, if someone else has any more goo ideas fell free to jump in and let have a conversion.

When these manual trannies begin to pop out of gear, it's usually because the endplay in one or more of the trans shafts has increased to where the shaft moves enough to decouple the syncro muffs with changing positive and negative loading.
This play often is found in one or more of the trannies large ball bearings;
Ocassionally wear in the syncro muffs and syncros themselves can cause popping out of gear, but that case is usually confined to popping out of 1 single gear.
There is nothing short of complete overhaul that restores the appropriate minimal shaft endplay that will cure your ills.
Shifting manual trannies without using the clutch is a trick that only those with more money than brains employ.
