My timing chain rattles for 2-3 seconds on start up only when truck is warmed up. It needs to sit for a few minutes though. If you turn it off then start it right back up no problem. Never does it on Cold start. All I can think of is that the tensioner for some reason is not working? Any ideas

 

well your tensioner is actuated with oil pressure, It usually takes a few seconds to build up proper oil pressure after start up so it prob does it when its warm because the oil is thinner and takes a little longer to pump up. or you just got a tensioner going out.

 

The engine was rebuilt around 9000 miles ago. All the timing stuff was replaced.New oil pump. Is this something I should be concerned with?

 

Mine always is noisy until Oil Pressure builds when first starting the truck. If you have an SR5 cluster (or aftermarket oil pressure gauge) watch it and I'll bet the noise goes away when the pressure is at normal pressure.

Use a factory filter it will go away. The noises your hearing is the chain slapping the timing cover. Factory oil filters have a valve in them that keeps oil in the motor so that the tentioner has oil ready for start up so the chain doesn's slap the cover. Fram,autoparts store filters dont have them most of the time. You can run a V8 filter from a tundra and it will hold more oil and have the valve in it. Everyone i meet asks why i go to the dealer for a filter. Thats the reason. I try to use factory parts when possible. If people are getting all this high milage with factory stuff they have to be doing something right! give it a try and see what you think.

Mine did this, and i dropped the pan and found slider crap everywhere, so i replaced it.
