Timing Belt Tracking

Timing Belt Tracking
I have a 1984 2.4L Diesel. I changed the timing belt recently, and when I took the cover off, I noted a lot of fluffy shavings apparently from the timing belt. The outside edge had lots of wear. When I was putting the new timing belt in, I noted that it wants to walk off the crankshaft gear (toward the front). If not for the guide pushing it back, it would walk off by about 1/4 inch. I thought about putting a spacer behind the crankshaft gear which would move the harmonic balancer out, throwing the other belts off by a little, but wonder if that would be preferable to premature wearing on the timing belt. Good? Bad? Other thoughts? Thanks.

no clue for sure, but.....
In my experience, if a guide is holding a belt in place, the belt with kick the bucket quick. I would think that getting it to stay on the pulley would do more good than bad, but another side of me says that that is how toyota designed it. Maybe you need a new crank pulley.
