surging at very light throttle

I recently got my '85 22r 4x4 pickup running well again. Yes, my camshaft sprocket was off by 1 link. The problem now is, at veeerrrry light throttle, the engine surges. If I give just a little more gas it runs great, back off to just maintain speed and it starts surging again. The engine has about 50,000 miles on a rebuild. The vehicle did sit for about 2 years before last week and I had the carburetor rebuilt just prior to not using it. Gave it a complete tune up after it got running again. A number of things come to mind, varnish in the carb, clogged catalytic converter, old coil, any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

My 4x2 did the same thing and it turned out that the steel vacuum line going to the main vacuum advance diaphram was cracked. I put a rubber hose in place of it to get it advancing again and it stopped surging. I would assume that a blown vacuum advance would cause the same thing. The main diaphram on the vacuum advance is the port closest to the front of the vehicle.

If you have a tps it is going to be the problem. I had two of my 22re's that had this exact problem. Tps replacement was the fix.

When the vacuum advance was broken in my 4x4, I was averaging about 19 MPG and went up to about 22 MPG after I put a new one in. There are many things that affect gas mileage. Your truck might just need a tune-up, or it might have more serious problems. How does it run?
