I have a FROR full float rear end. It uses manual front hubs in the rear now. My issue is that the lock rings work their way out when on the highway. When they do slide out they seem to find the next tooth and the spring pops them back in. Sometimes it doesn't pop back in and I coast to a stop, pull out the lock ring, re-install it and off I go.

Drive flanges are on the way but untill then any ideas what I can do to correct this?

 

I've seen the IFS hubs do this, and the Auto hubs of course.but not the SFA hubs. Possible the detents are worn or the spring is to weak to hold the ball in the detent?

 

Detent ball? Is that for the red knob? The knob doesn't turn on its own. I actually have the knob set to "free" but before I install the lock ring/red knob cap I turn the ring to the locked position. That way a curious person won't turn the knob in a parking lot and have my truck roll away.

I've never had a hub as far apart as your talking...I'll dig up some diagrams and take a look.

so, relative to the below picture, my clutch is sliding off of its engagement teeth on the axle all by itself, only while under constant load. The control handle does not spin when this happens. It stays in the same position I put it in.

What I was trying to describe above was, With the free wheeling cover removed and everything up to the clutch connected to it, I turn the control handle to the free position, but turn the clutch to the locked position so someone doesn't unlock my hub on me in a parking lot and cause my truck to roll.

I'm confused at why the clutch would work itself off, any theories are welcome.

 

 

I'm taking a shot here, because I'm a little confused as to what's happening. I'm sure you're describing it fine, I'm just having trouble grasping what's happening. I may be a little slow...

Anyway, if you turn the hub dial, the clutch wil push in or out, inside the hub. That large coil spring is what creates tension for the hub to stay engaged, or pull outward to disengage. The pawl and spring pushes/pulls the clutch. The pawl rides in grooves on the control dial, which causes it to push the clutch towards the differential for engagement, and when the dial is turned to "Free", it pulls the pawl away from the diff. The spring acts like a "buffer" for the clutch, allowing the clutch to engage/disengage when there is no driving tension on the assembly. So that it will line up properly and engage/disengage completely (theoretically).
