Is This Possible?
I have a 1983 toyota 4x4 pickup that I would like to fuel inject. I have come across a great deal on a fuel injection setup that I am hoping will work. It is a 1986 Toyota 4-runner that the parts will be coming from. So what I am asking is will the intake manifold from the 86 bolt up to the 1983 head? I know I will have to build some sort of a custom mount for the knock sensor, but will the manifold itself bolt up properly. If the swap will work please let me know, and if not please let me know what the best way to make it work would be. After doing extensive research I have been told yes all will be well from some, and no from others. Everyone seems confident to know what they are talking about but i'm getting mixed opinions. So if someone really knows their toyota your help is much appreciated.

I am not sure about this, but I figured I would put in my $.02 since no one else is.
I think that an '86 manifold will not work on an '83. I remeber hearing something about an extra bolt, so it will be worth measuring and counting the bolt holes to see if it will fit.
If it will not fit, try finding a fuel injection system from a Celica. They got an earlier version of the 22RE that did not use a knock sensor and the head should be the same as your '83. Celicas started using EFI in either '82 or '83.

I'm not sure of the celica head swap, but i do know the 84 and earlier pickups have a different deck hight of the block and head than the 85 and later. If you put an 86 head on an 83 block or an 83 head on an 86 block the timing chain will not fit right.
If you want EFI, buy a EFI 2wd for cheap and swap the whole engine, wiring harness, and computer in.
If I were you, I would look into a propane conversion. I heard they are great with the 22r motor.
Good luck,
Casey

I don't know about the intake and head.
If you don't want have the entire wiring harness, AFM, ECU, etc. Megasquirt is a good way to go. Its an open source project and you can piece together about anything you want.
