OverHeating issue on 85 22RE

Well i just installed a detroit locker and drove it for a day. it worked great. i started on the next project the next day....4.70 gears. Done. gears installed and back on truck(85 toy pickup 22re). works great. Drove the truck like 5 miles, stopped for food, and on the way back home while accelerating i hear a racheting or clicking sound only while under load or moderate to heavy acceleration. By the time im back home its overheated. The following morning, i check the radiator, no water, so i filled it up and started the engine and let it idle. After about 10 minutes of idling (idle in normal) the motor begins to generate quite a bit of heat. WTF is going on?? I guess im going to start with the thermostat and new radiator cap. Im also not sure if the clicking sound is related to the overheated motor?? i checked my drivetrain and its pretty solid.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Start with the thermostat, there cheap and easy to replace. If that doesn`t work then have the radiator checked out. Anything thing more than that and it starts getting expensive.

Always replace the tstat after overheating. The wax pellet melts.

Lockers make all kinds of noises and weird feelings under normal operation. Especially around turns.

How many miles on the truck? Did you hear the ratcheting before the locker? If so, it could be the timing chain needs replacing and that clicking noise is the chain eating into the timing cover...
