My rig is leaking oil what looks to be near the water pump pulley.
I've got an 84 22R. MY autozone guy tells me it may be the oil pump throwing oil because the relief valve is failing. He tells me I should replace the oil pump. MY oil pressure gauge reads from the lowest mark when idling and at the first mark when hitting around 2-3k rpm's. Also my valve cover breather tube that connects to my air cleaner is leaking some oil when running higher rpm and when it gets hot, it blow a little white smoke. My engine is just under the 50k mark from a rebuild. I am running Valvoline 15W40. Any help would be appreciated!!

Timing cover, oil pump o-ring, valve cover & half moon seal, and front crankshaft are the main areas of leaks for the front of the engine. You gotta thoroughly clean the front of the engine to pinpoint exactly where the leak is coming from.

As far as oil pressure, the gauge isn't exactly accurate, so I wouldn't take its reading seriously. Many people will rebuild their engine and fail to replace the oil pressure sending unit. The oil pressure sending unit has an internal rubber diaphragm inside that gets weak over time and starts giving lower, false readings. Buy an external oil pressure gauge and take a reading at cold idle, hot idle, and 3K RPM with a hot engine to determine what your oil pressure truly is.

As far as oil blow-by, this could be bad valve seals or rings. The engine shouldn't be having blow-by issues with that mileage and 15-40 oil. I have a feeling you were taken advantage on a poorly rebuilt engine. That's why I ALWAYS do it myself and even check the work of the machine shop using bore gauges and micrometers.

 

Because it has the proper amount of zinc and other lubricating qualities that "normal" oil no longer has. Also, Toyota recommended 20-50 oil until 84 where emission tightened up further. These are "loose" engines which require thicker oil. 15-40 is the best oil you can possibly run in the 22r series engine.

 

I've got a '84 too and I thought the manual called for 5w30. I could be wrong. I've had mine for a little over year and use Mobil 1 5w30 and no issues. 130K original miles on the motor/truck.

 

Yup, that sounds closer though I wouldn't be surprised if it actually called for 10w-30.

Some people just have no idea how oil/engines work.
Even if the xxw-50 or xxw-50 was correct (and I highly doubt the latter) the lower number should always be no higher than 5w these days.
The only way to really tell what a particular engine "needs" requires an oil temperature and oil pressure gauge.

Had a similar leak a few months back. Found part of the timing chain cover gasket was ripped and pushed out from between the block and cover, took a weekend to replace without removing the head and havn't had any problems since.

 

I run 10W40 in my 84 22r. But then I live in st. george, utah, and we were over 105 all last week.

 

It looks as though the front and rear seals to the oil pump were shot. Autozones computer was the one that suggested 15W40. By the way jmazoso, I am from St. George but I moved to Tacoma, WA. Sure miss the heat and especially the sun!!

 

Heck, I live in Tucson AZ and it's hotter than that
I run 5w-20..
