New fuel pump, need to prime?
Hey guys,
My truck has sat a lot over the past few years and last ran at Christmas. Recently it will only run if I pour gas into the carb. I replaced the fuel pump but it is not pumping fuel to the carb. The gas gauge says 3/4 of a tank. I thought I might need to prime the new pump. Anyone else experienced this? How do I prime it? Should I use my hand vacuum pump and pull from the tank?
The truck is a 1984 2wd long bed with a 22R and 5speed.

I have an 87 5 speed, 2 WD pickup, with a 22R engine. I've replaced the fuel pump a few times, say 3?, since I bought it in early 88. I don't drive it in the winter where I live, cause in the snow, it's all over the place. No real weight on the rear wheels, so no traction in snow. When I lived in Yuma, where I lived until 06, it didn't matter, when you can get Christmas day temps or 100 or more. Not a whole lot of snow in Yuma. Ever. I did see a few flakes one Christmas day. They didn't stick, just hit the ground and melted away within a couple seconds, but I saw them!
So it sits, late fall to late spring. As I said, I've also got 327k miles on it, and I've replaced the fuel pump 3 or 4 times. I've never primed the new pump once. Nor primed it come time for the spring run up.
You need to pump the gas pedal 3 times, then crank as long as possible, up to 45 seconds or so, then let it rest for a few minutes. Like 5 minutes. Pump the gas pedal 3 times, and try again. After one or two iterations, it SHOULD fire right up. Mine always has...
Does that help at all?
