Im new here..Just picked up a 84 4runner with a 22r. Previous owner installed a new alternator and voltage regulator. Would not charge the battery. So I replaced the alternator with a "B" circuit alternator. Now I'm getting 14.7 volts at the battery while running and when I accelerate it jumps to 17-18 volts, and the brake and charge lights are on. Also, does anyone have a picture of the fuse block under the hood? I need to know what the fuses and relays are for.

What's next, should I change out the voltage regulator? Am I missing something?

 

I am really not sure what you mean by a B circuit Alternator ??Might be why no response .

I am guessing here you mean a newer style alternator with a built in voltage regulator .

Just how did you do the wiring ??

With out knowing that it is hard to troubleshoot the problem

You have a overcharging condition most likely from the alternator you installed could be just a bad voltage regulator could be some how wired wrong causing the issue .

 

What I have read there is a A and a B circuit alternators and not interchangeable. B circuit has a 6 pin connector to the regulator and A circuit has a 5 pin connector to the regulator. I checked and I have the A circuit.
I have 2 regulators, one with the truck and a new one. When The regulator that came with the runner is hooked up it charges high. (14.7 at idle and 18.9 when accelerating) when the new regulator is hooked up it will not charge the battery.
Stumped, what to look for now?

The 84 has an external voltage regulator and the alternator has a different plug then the 85 and up. Not sure if that is what you mean by the A and B circuits, I have not heard of that term. Just wanted to make you aware of the 84 and older alternators. I am just guessing that the regulator is built into the newer alternators???

 

The wiring for the runner is stock. I did not change anything.

 

The regulator has a 5 pin connector. Apparently that's an A circuit. I have 2 regulators, one that came with the truck and a new one. With The new one the battery will not charge. The other one over charges, 14.7 at idle and 17.8-18.8 when I accelerate.

 

Seems to be the new one is not working while the old one is over charging

Get another voltage regulator
