My new project -- 1985 Runner

Got it a few weeks ago....

As it arrived. 85 SR5.

After a wash and dropped the pushbar.

It was a driver "as is" when I bought it. But I wanted to give it a good tune up.

So far I've replaceded the front main seal, water pump, plugs, plug wires, radiator, dist cap, rotor button, PCV valve, air filter, oil/filter.

Still going to replace all other fluids, thermostat, etc.

Loving it!!!!

It's got some surface rust on the frame, nothing major. A wire brush and some POR should handle that.

The body is going to need both front fenders replaced and work around the left rear quarter. Nothing major. For the region I live in, the rust isn't bad at all.

You wouldn't believe some of 4runners I looked at when I was looking for a 1st gen. They'd advertise as "solid body" and you'd get there to realize it was solid because the rockers and quarters had been created from bondo! I can't imagine living in California (or somewhere like it) where you can find 20-25 year old vehicles with no rust. Unreal!

sometime ill get you a pic of my 20 year old frame with no rust except above the driver rear tire, theres a tiny bit of surface rust about an inch in diameter, and its super light you can see black under it. .
rust i gotta worry about is the stuff on the back of the cab on the roof... my old boss had me move boards and the wood scraped off the paint and its now rusty, but no cancer yet.
ill sell you mine for 3000, 93toy!

Nice truck, makes me miss the 85 decals that were once on mine...

Be careful with the por-15, don't get it anywhere on the exterior unless you plan to bondo over it.

I recently did in the inside of both front fenders and around the lip on the outside. the only mistake was that you can't easily sand por down so if you get paid job over it you can see where you applied the por. other than that the stuff worked great. I also did my back quarters which were about as rusty as yours (very minimal) i coated them with por inside and out (plus wells) then bondo'd over; looks great and i can't imagine the rust ever coming back right there.

have fun.

I totally agree about the SR5 decals, I love those things. When it gets repainted I'll probably replace them with James Dean decals.

Anymore tips/advice on the POR? I haven't done alot of homework on it yet, but it sounds like the way to stop rust in it's tracks. I wasn't aware of what you were saying about using it with bondo. Anymore info on it (from your experience) would be helpful.

POR is good stuff man. Sand just means once its on there, it aint comin off and it doesn't sand very well. It eats the sand paper.

Nice rig. As a fellow 1st gen owner I will be watching closely. Congrats!

Did I mention mine is an SR5 too. . I left that poor dudes house feeling like I should go back and give him $500 more. But he said it was me, a fellow off roader, or the ex wife. Our kids ride dirt bikes together now, so he still gets to touch her every now and then.

We get clean cars out here, but we also have to smog everything back to 1976, visual and sniff.

Cant wait to get my decals too. I love that look. I'm still watching you. I have been dreaming about these cars since they came out when I was 5 years old.

I bought a complete sr5 parts 4runner a couple of months ago. It spent most of its life in Asheville. It use to be metallic copper, now metallic green. The back half underside is very rusty. The spare tire mechanism wouldn't work. If you really want to fix rust, sandblast and spray metal etching primer on it.

Update:

Got a Kenwood stereo and speakers put in. Nothing fancy, but better than a hole in the dash.

Had some shifter boots made by a lady I know. She KICKED BUTT! They look factory.

Got the Pro Comp 4 inch suspension lift installed this weekend. (pics soon)

35x15x15 Swamper TSL's on 15x10 American Racing Outlaw II's are sitting in the basement. Just waiting to get the 5.29's installed. I'll get started on that this week.

POR sitting in the garage, just waiting on a day off and good weather.

More to come....
