Help I'm stupid

I have an 85 4runner with a 22re. I'm an idiot and pulled my distibutor out without marking anything now I need to find out how to put it back in (the right way) so that my engine will actually fire. Can someone help me out here and give my some directions on how to put my distributor back in so that it's in the right timing and will actually fire. Thanks!

Anthony

Put the engine at 0 degrees DTC on the compression stroke

Put the dizzy in with the rotor pointing to #1.

How do I know when the engine is a 0 degress (top dead center) on the compression stroke. I'm telling ya I don't know crap when it comes to this stuff.

You can just turn the engine until the marks on the crank pulley (the belt pully down low on the center of your engine) lines up with zero. If it's on the compression stroke you should feel resistance and hear air hissing. Without pulling the valve cover that's the only way I can think of to know if you're at top dead center (but really you should just pull the valve cover). So anyways, with the little mark on the pulley lined up with the zero in the tab hanging over the pulley, you would either be lined up with #4 or #1. Obviously you want #1, and you've got a 50/50 chance of being there as long as the line on the pulley is lined up with 0. Look at the "22r, how to set the timing" thread for a diagram of this, that should give you an idea of what you're looking for. You turn the pully by putting a wrench on the bolt in the center of the pulley. You need to have the tranny in neutral.

Then you point the rotor in the distributer to the #1 spark plug wire. You then insert the distributer. The rotor should, if you're standing on the driver side of your engine looking towards the passenger side, point to about...10 o'clock? When you put the disty in, the rotor will roll a little one way or the other as it engages with the cam gear. If it's now not really pointing at the #1 wire, pull it out and turn insert it back in a little the opposite way, so that when the rotor turns it's pointing right at where the #1 wire plugs into the disty cap. If you get all that right you'll then need a timing light to set your timing right, but if you get this far it will at least run. The best thing would be to grab a freind, or aquaintance, to walk you through it. This is basic tune-up stuff that I know can be intimidating when you have no clue, but it's super easy and saves you a lot of money and trouble in the long run.

if you look down at your bottom pully on the front of the eninge (know as the harmonic balencer) there will be a small nocth on it near the closer to the enigne. above that there should be a plastic piece that sticks out, wipe the grease and dirt off it and you should see lines with numbers. macth up the nocth on the pully to the line with the 0. BAM you have found TDC

Set the notch mark on the balancer (often its marked with white paint) to the "0" on the timing cover. If you try to start it and it won't start, you are 180 degrees off.

Btw, you DO NOT have to take off the valve cover to do any of this. Its really just a matter of simple deduction. If the truck doesn't start with the dizzy set on that zero, rotate it ONE turn to zero again (the rotor will be pointing 180 away from 1) and reset the dizzy back to zero. Then the truck will start.
