I have gotten the head off! There was coolant in all of the head, but there didn't appear to be anything major to the gasket that would have caused it. any ideas? Thanks

I don't know if you'd necessarily see where the gasket failed. If you have the head off, then you should have the timing cover off, so check the cover to make sure the chain didn't wear all the way through it anywhere. There's certainly no reason to do a head gasket and not do the timing chain/oil pump/water pump & gaskets at the same time, in my opinion.

Just pull the cover off, and you might need to buy a new one.

And as 83 said, you may not really be able to tell where the gasket failed.. sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not so obvious and usually the gasket tears or bends or gets deformed when you remove the head making it more difficult to see.

not to mention coolant spills everywhere when you break the seal so seeing coolant somewhere is no indication that is where the leak might of been. =/

You may have a cracked head, have it pressure tested by a local machine shop. Should only cost you 35 bucks and id have them swap in new valve stem seals for you as well.

but since you said you can see the grooves in the cover (looking down it) and the guide is gone... thats probably the culprit, not the head/or/gasket ..etc

g'luck

Btw, I notice theres a lot of oil on the front of the motor, so you've got a leak somewhere in the front cover seal... or the rubber grommet at the valve cover.. or the valve cover seal is leaking.

Good time to replace all that anyway =)

Both my motors are oilfree, man I love that.

I have no idea. I got some rock ones from engbldr.com (i think that's the site) decent prices.

It was not the timing cover that was the culprit. I took the head in today and got it checked. It had a crack above cyl. 3 that went into the intake valve seat and went deep enough to get into the coolant passage which would explain where my coolant was going. I got a new head and now I am golden. I'm cleaning everything right now.

I do have a prob w/the carb though. It doesn't seem to be working properly. I think I'll start another thread involving that problem though. Thank you everyone for the advice and help even at times when I had really dumb questions. It has been a learning experience for me. The entire thing. Assembly will begin tomorrow. That is the plan anyways.

found the solution to the carb. Luckily it was just a lack of knowledge about them. It is good to go now.
