When there is play in the wheel, is there a way to distinguish between worn wheel bearings vs trunnion bearings?

Yes, lift the front tires off the ground then grab at 6- and 12-o'clock and give it a good tug. Repeat at 3- and 9-o'clock. If more play felt at 6-12, then likely the knuckle or trunion bearings. If equal play, then likely wheel bearings. If more play at 3-9, then could be worn out tie rod ends. You can also put a pry bar under the tire and lift and lower and look behind the wheel to see what is moving. If you see the knuckle rocking in and out, then it is probably those bearings.

If you have manual steering there is an adjustment for the worm gear in your steering box. The side has a locking nut, loosen it and adjust the screw to your liking them tighten the lock nut

This really helped tighten up my steering and took about 5 minutes. I still need to tighten up/replace a wheel bearing, but it's much better.
