I've got a 1990 SR5 standard cab pickup with a 3.0 six cylinder under the hood. 258,000 miles, relatively trouble free. The problem: For the last few weeks, I've suffered engine stall -outs at stop lights and intersections. It's got a manual transmission PLUS I've been driving a stick all my driving life. It will behave fine, and then for some reason, if I don't have the "R's" high enough (1200-1500 MINIMUM) when I slowly let out the clutch, it will stall out and die. It WILL NOT start again unless I give it a few minutes. I have NEVER had this problem before. At first I thought it might have been some bad fuel I put in. I went to a more reputable gas station and completely filled the tank with a higher octane. It did seem to run better for awhile, but yesterday the same situation occurred again. It doesn't do it cold, just after it's been running awhile. Any thoughts or suggestions? I've either become an idiot with a manual transmission all of a sudden (quite posssible) or there is something else amiss. My thoughts right off the bat are: a fuel pump going bad or fuel filter problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

 

With that many miles it could be alot of things starting to fail. are you throwing any codes? I would say a good tune up with new plugs, wires, cap rotor, fuel filter, ect. Also clean your battery terminals real good.

Its gonna cost you some to do all that but might aswell start with some cheap things first as they should be replaced most likely anyway if you havent done so already recently. 250K on that motor is not uncommon to have more issues and im suprised it even got that far

 

Hope you get it figured out man. I've been dealing with a similar problem for over a year now. I've swapped out a lot of parts and I still get a stall every once in a while. Last time was a few weeks ago it wouldn't start in a friends driveway but eventually started 5 minutes later. Here's my thread:

I've had a complete tune up done roughly 20,000 miles ago. The plugs have 10,000 more miles of life left on them. New wires with them. That's from the Toyota mechanic whose been working exclusively on this truck for quite sometime now. Entirely new distributor assembly put on within the past 18 months or so. Mechanic checked for water in the engine but found none and said it was not throwing any codes. He also could not replicate the condition, which doesn't help much...The fuel filter is something worth looking into. Do you know where it's located on this truck? Thanks.

 

Pass side on the frame rail. Follow the lines from the tank to filter. Its kinda a bare to get to but its also next to the torsion bar adjustment if that helps any

 

If that doesn't help, check the TPS, I've had similar problems.
