electrical problem

With my 85 22r im having big problems. im running a very old set of KC lights (4 of them). when im running my truck with with the electric fuel pump, electric fan, standard running lights and basic electrical stuff for the truck its ok. but when i flip the kc lights on it will kill all power to truck in about 5 mins at idle. if running the rpms up the truck will stay running but then when u let it idle the truck dies. now its only when i turn the kc lights on. if the truck dies i can get it back running but if i turn on the kc again its over. truck wont start back up. fuel pump will run, fan will run and truck will turn over. then the battery dies quickly. not getting any fire. u can smell the carb being flooded out. i just put a new coil in it. now if i bring the truck home and put it on the charger all is well in a day or so till i run the kc lights. (kc lights are old. do not use H-3 bulbs) please help

The stock alternator on your truck is only 60 amps, and your pulling more power than it capable of keeping up with. Look at everything you have to power, electric fan, they draw around 100 amps when they start and drop down to around 30 amps when running. An electric fuel pump, basic vehicle running lights and accessories, and 4 kc lights, there is no way a stock 60 amp alternator can keep up with that much load. You need to up grade to a high output alternator. I just bought a 160 amp alternator for my 86 4Runner because i will be installing an electric fan and a winch and a few other things.
