ECU questions

I have looked all over on a few sites and read through many posts here. I would really appreciate a well informed answer on if I need to swap ECU's. I have a 1985 pickup and it currently is (or was) a 2wd with an with an auto transmission and I am swapping it to 4wd and a stick. I have heard that it would not matter but then the few other posts I read said that it ran rough and was flat at low speeds and hard accelerations. Should I be looking for a 4wd stick ECU? I know it should not matter on the trans as it will not affect the shifting in anyway but I could see a variable in the spray timing between an auto power band and a stick. I appreciate any help with this as I am a little confused. Second on this is how would I know if the ECU is good when purchasing? I fear there is no real way to know until I hook it up.

The part numbers are the same for automatic vs manual for the same engine type. The 22R, 22REC, and 22RTEC have different part numbers.
