Differential Dilema
I have a 85 4runner and I am wanting to build a rear axle with 4.88 gears. My first question is whether an 85 4cyl 4runner and a 90 V6 single cab Pu 4x4 have the same axle. If so then im assuming the gears for the 85 would work in the V6 axle. If not would it be worth the trouble to build the V6 axle to put in my 4 runner or is there no advantage in going with the heavier axle. The reason i ask this is because i have the opportunity to work on a guys 4 runner in trade for a set of 4.88's and bearings etc.(Full diff rebuild kit) If i would be better off using the V6 axle (if the gears wont interchange) then i will negotiate something else for my labor. Hope this confused you guys. let me know if you need more clarification on what im actually asking. Thanks

axle widths will be different, the 85 being narrower by almost 3 inches if I recall right, however the rear 3rd is a direct swap in from the 90 to 85 although there are so major differences between the two. as the 85 is a two pinion and the v6 is 4 pinion. More info can be read here:
