Question "Cross bred 85?" timing chain job

Well about a week ago I decided to rip apart my 85 pickup's timing chain so i could install new guides, chain, and etc. Being that this was an 85 i ordered all parts and kits for the 85 and after 22r. Well after getting the chain kit in today i realized that i need a 98 link chain instead of a 96 link that came with the kit. So now i'm stuck with having to go back to the parts store and swap all parts out for so i can get the pre 85 22r parts. Hasn't been a fun day thats for sure. Just want to know if it is due to the fact this is a June 85 truck or do you think there has been a motor swap at some point in time? Also where could i find a marking on the block so i can tell what year motor this is?
